Well, ol' me, I am super paranoid of when I download something, I always check my harddrive, It's a small one, 50gb one. I got it in September, and now it's at 30Gb.

Let's put myself in a bad scenario. My harddrive runs out of space, What should I do to get my space back, but keeping my files/programs? I know that 100% space wont be restored but most.

Thanks.

There is a tool called xdiskusage that can analyze hard disk usage for you and show you exactly which directories (including subdirectories) take up the most space. Safe to delete are contents of all "tmp" directories, as long as the apps that are using those directories are not running (and of course unless you put important stuff in there which you should never do). Removing old no longer required kernel sources from /usr/src as well as no longer required downloaded distfiles from /usr/portage/distfiles is also a good place to clean out.

However if most of your space is occupied by stuff you downloaded into your /home directory, you'll have to sort it out by yourself.
