Seeing as how they are all shit except BSD, i dont think this is going to be much of a debate. BSD is the only one that is usable on the desktop, and it is the one that is closes to linux. _________________ Stand With Mittens |

I use Solaris and *BSD stuff already. Plan 9 would be cool to try though... _________________ The free market gave me gonorrhea. |

Could always try to run Minix and get that "I wonder what would happen if I redesigned this thing..."

Yeah, I have tried OpenSolaris. Before linux, I used to work on Unix exclusively (Solaris with CDE). I have used the hotjava browser on Solaris.
I am one of the guys who was introduced to windows after linux, and that's one of the reasons I still feel very uncomfortable with windows and hate MSFT for that. |

If Linux didn't exist, I'd probably be using FreeBSD now. _________________ ~~ Peter: Brony, GNU/Linux geek, caffeine addict, and Free Software advocate.

Haiku, BeOS used to be a great desktop OS, and a project trying to bring it back to life is certainly worth some consideration.
That or a desktop oriented BSD alternative. |

I am actually attempting to migrate my fileserver to plan9 right now. I also dual boot plan9 on my desktop. I intend to also have a low cost plan9 terminal on my desk by the end of the month (to get the full distributed OS eexperience).
I have already moved away from nfs and am now completely using 9P2000 for my network file system protocol using npfs and the v9fs kernel driver. I have been running plan9port on my laptop and desktop for a while now, just for fun, now its getting serious.
So i guess my answer is plan9.
EDIT: there are, of course, some obvious things holding me back from using it as my sole OS, however, all I am lacking is a good webbrowser. If there was a solid, flexible webbrowser on plan9, and a few more convenience type drivers (like frequency scaling, or usb keyboard support), I would seriously consider using it on more than just a fileserver, and a networked terminal. until then, slackware. _________________ The Dose Makes the Poison |

hmm, tough one. Of course there always raises the discuession of weather there would be open source without the effort linus put into linux and keeping it open.
I guess I would probably be using [free]BSD or OpenSolaris |

No, it doesn't. Linus doesn't actually have much to do with the free software movement, as a whole... Look at the Free Software Foundation and the GNU Project. These are really the guys behind free software.
Plus there's no real 'effort' put into keeping Linux open - it just is, as provided by the GNU GPL v.2. The licencing can't change, for reasons often noted before - too many contributors, some deceased, to the Linux kernel to actually contact and get confirmation for a licence change. So it's open, and under GPL2, forever, basically. Unless someone rewrites it (almost) from the ground up. |

I'd probably try one of the BSDs... I should do it anyways, I've been hearing good things about them...
Otherwise, it'd depend on the functionality. If Windows did its job properly, I'd have no complaints using it... |

The Poll is missing an option!!!
Probably wouldn't use any Open Source OS on my desktop, then! _________________ Antonino Catinello | http://catinello.eu |

The main problem I see with BSDs is lack of drivers, it really bites to not have reliable accelerated graphics and peripheral support.
I really want to see linux break onto the desktop platform in large numbers tho. See just how bad microsoft will take a hit to the balls. |

I'd use FreeBSD. I played around with it some time ago and it seems to be really usable... _________________ Underneath it all
