which kernel for nforce2 ?

what kernel do you use successfully with your nforce2 board?

I'm talking the works here.. full usb support, full firewire support (if you have it)

I can only get everything working on the vanila sources. each other kernel crashes with different problems! ARGH

thought this might be a helpful guide for others..

I have found ck-sources to be the best, but firewire crashes the system on boot if it's enabled

so I have to use vanilla, which still isn't too bad, atleast everything works. vanilla also gives me the fastest hdd access

Im using gaming-sources, and the hdd access isnt as fast as yours, what kind of HD do u got? Ive got a WD 80MB 7200RPM 8mb cache and this is my output

BTW, 2.5.70 comes with "NVIDIA nForce/nForce2 chipset support" under Character Devices.

running gentoo sources (just upgraded to -r5 couple days ago). when i first setup the kernel (was -r2) i went through every menu screen under menuconfig and was very picky about what things were included, which were modules, and the rest i disabled. took little over an hour or so to do as i was not in a hurry and wanted to make sure the kernel had only what it needed and nothing more.

i've had 0 problems, the system is very fast, and very responsive. albeit, i havent tried any of the other kernels, i dont feel the need to try any of the others.

this is on an epox 8rda by the way, running an xp2400 and a ti4400 gf4.

sorry, forgot to add...i have sb live support built in for my sb live card, usb is built in with various drivers as modules, and i2c for lm_sensors is a module.

so with this kernel, i have access to my motherboard temp sensors, usb so far has been perfect. i use a usb optical logitech mouse, using a hp psc2110 printer, and a wacom graphire tablet.

I'm on gaming-sources, but I might give another a shot after reading this thread. I've got an nf7-s v2 with the latest stable bios. None of the onboard stuff works very well for me with this kernel. I think I got an IP once with the nvnet driver and onboard NIC. Nvaudio wouldn't let my games have access to /dev/dsp (I think it was), even though it's set in devfsd.conf correctly, and xmms and xine have no problems using it. Alsa won't send anything to the left speaker. So I went back to my good old SB Live with emu10k1 OSS.

I've also had to disable ACPI or none of the NICs I have around here will work. After reading this I might try either gentoo's kernel on it, or the 2.4.21 vanilla.

I gave 2.5.70-mm1 a shot. OHCI USB module won't load for me, and the emu10k1 oss module doesn't want to send anything to my left speaker, as well. I've double checked the balance with aumix.

I have the same as you.. but the buffer-cache reads is more to do with your system bus and cpu speed.. of which I have a barton XP running at 2300Mhz on 200fsb.

the buffered disk reads is about the same, and that's what counts!

I have an Abit NV7 and I'm using the 2.4.20-r2 gaming sources without any problems. I use Alsa (0.90) instead of the Nvidia module and the ebuild for the Nforce network chip (net-misc/nforce-net). I don't have Firewire, but the USB (usb-ohci) works fine.

Plug into the nforce NIC and no problems. Very strange.

I'm going to give the gentoo sources a shot and see how they go. Very eager for 2.5 to get stable so I can try out the native nforce support too!

FWIW,

I don't use firewire or anything but I've got the A7N8X board and I don't have any trouble with it using the latest gentoo-sources. I'm using the alsa drivers for the audio and the nforce-net as well.

/dev/hda:
Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 1.38 seconds = 46.55 MB/sec
Timing buffer-cache reads: 128 MB in 0.35 seconds =365.71 MB/sec

This is running the AMD XP2400+ with 1 Gig or ram and a matrox G450 dual head / xinerama setup. Only problem I've had with gentoo to date wasn't a gentoo problem. Lots of font problems with the xinerama under the previous Xfree86. Latest update fixed that.

Well, granted, I'm a total n00b to Gentoo, but so far so good with the gentoo-sources.

My MB is an Nforce2 with onboard SATA RAID, 1394, DD 5.1, LAN (nvnet)..

I've used all the above features to some degree of success (some just for test purposes), but I've had to dig into the forum here for several suggestions in some cases, part. regarding the nic and sound in conjunction with the other features.

at the moment i am using:

but I want to install a new kernel linux-2.4.21-ac1, but I have a problem if I laod the usb-ohci modul the system freeze, with the old kernel I do not ahve this problem

Any ideas? I have a leadtek nforce2 board.

I'm working on a 2.4.21-ck1 ebuild here. It can include an optional nforce2, but I don't have this chipset to test it. Could somebody here try it? (with at least "nforce2" in your USE var to enable the patch)

PS: this ebuild follows the -ck devellopement, so it is experimental... It allows several optional patches, but some may not work. Read the comments and the ebuild to see what flags are allowed.

I wrote a bug report yesterday no real problem with nforce2 (it was dectected corectly and hdparm -tT was fine too) but I had the emu10k1 problems, but I will test again today.
