I'm trying to get 3d acceleration working for my radeon 9200. Unfortunately, I'm not only running into the typical ATI installation hangups but I'm also dealing with an unsupported agp chipset.

I don't have DRI enabled in the kernel, I have agpgart compiled as a module. I have compiled xfree-drm but have not messed with ati-drivers.

Here's the relevant bit of dmesg after running 'insmod agpgart'

Code:

Linux agpgart interface v0.99 (c) Jeff Hartmann
agpgart: Maximum main memory to use for agp memory: 203M
agpgart: Unsupported SiS chipset (device id: 0648), you might want to try agp_try_unsupported=1.
agpgart: no supported devices found.

X start up fine without agpgart (sans 3d acceleration of course) but if I run 'insmod agpgart agp_try_unsupported=1' then it blanks on start up and requires a hard reset.

Relevant bit from insmod unsupported:

Code:

Linux agpgart interface v0.99 (c) Jeff Hartmann
agpgart: Maximum main memory to use for agp memory: 203M
agpgart: Trying generic SiS routines for device id: 0648
agpgart: AGP aperture is 64M @ 0xe0000000

Has anyone gotten 3d acceleration working with this SiS chipset or am I SOL? I am about to return this motherboard (Abit SR7-8x) because of a bad FDC, is there one that is better supported that I should consider?

Now, I don't like the looks of that BIOS checksum, but I would check that you have MTRR compiled into your kernel, cause I don't think you do.

Stu:
I did have MTRR compiled into my kernel I'm confident in that...

...seems to mean DRI sould work. Did you add the Section "DRI" stuff to your XF86Config? You have Load glx and Load dri in there too? Tried opengl-update xfree?

Well I did have DRI section in my xfreeconfig also load dri and load glx in there. Also I did opengl-update.

Currently though I'm completely reinstalling gentoo from scratch using gaming sources now and I messed up my partitions before so this is the chance of doing things right the first time ;). I hope I will... [/quote]

sdball,

I have a SiS chipset as well, and do have some acceleration. See above posts.

PostPosted: Sun May 25, 2003 6:48 am    Post subject: a howto for radeon <8500 and >=8500! Reply with quote

Okay, after having both a Radeon 7200 and now a 9500 Pro (yeah!) in my machine after my Geforce 3 failed (after less than a year, but I digress), I feel that I am confident enough with my experiences to write a little howto on the subject. This is also my first post on the forums, every other time I needed to find out something, I always just searched for it. However, with the Radeons, I see much confusion and I hope I can clear some of it up. <disclaimer> I only offer my personal experiences, but this hopefully will be found useful by at least someone. <end disclaimer>

Okay, the first thing you need to figure out is which drivers you will be using. As I have no real experience with all-in-wonder cards, I cannot provide info on ati-gatos, but basically, if you're using a pre-8500 radeon, it'll be xfree-drm, and anything newer will use ati-drivers.

Okay, kernel config first.
The rule of thumb here is to NEVER, EVER compile anything dri or drm into the kernel. All of that stuff is too out of date to use on xfree 4.2 or 4.3. Make sure that MTRR support is compiled in. If you're using xfree-drm, definitely compile agpgart support for your chipset as a module(check all chipsets if you're not sure, it won't add to the size AFAIK). If you're using the ati-drivers, this may be unnecessary, depending on your chipset, but when in doubt, do it. Okay, compile your new kernel, build modules, etc.(if you're not yet accustomed to this rigamarole, you will be soon enough :) Then reboot into your new kernel, but don't start x(it'll probably fail and dump you to a console if you do, but that's what we want anyhow). Now, onto driver install.

I'll describe ati-drivers first. Okay, now, from a console(as root):
Code:
emerge ati-drivers

Now, run:
Code:
opengl-update ati
/opt/ati/bin/fglrxconfig

as ati suggests, and the config program is pretty verbose as far as configuration goes, and also very straghtforward, unless you have a multi-mon setup (I do, btw), you can get by with selecting defaults for just about everything. Just set up your resolutions as 654321 or something so you don't end up with 640x480 ugliness on your x server. The ati drivers are easy as pie, so this is pretty much it. Run startx, run glxinfo, and hopefully everything turned out ok. The ati drivers provide their own gart just like the nvidia ones do, and i find it runs faster and better than the kernel one on my kt333, but YMMV. Experiment, test, have fun. That's what linux is all about.

Now, for the pre-8500 folk: (used to be me until ~3 days ago)
You may wish to edit your use flags by adding:
Code:
radeon -sis -3dfx -rage128 -matrix -gamma -i8x0

This saves a little disk space and compile time, but is unnecessary. Now, onto the good stuff:
Code:
emerge xfree-drm

Now, we need to edit /etc/X11/XF86Config. First things first. Anywhere in the file, add the code:
Code:
Section "dri"
Mode 0666
EndSection

to make dri world accessible.
Now, under Section "Device"(in the graphics device section) change the Driver line to read
Code:
Driver "radeon"
. This should be all you need to do in this file, if you have set up your monitor previously, if you have not, running xf86config should set all of this up for you. One more thing,
Code:
opengl-update xfree

to tell the system to use xfree as the gl renderer. Okay, now startx, run glxinfo and glxgears and enjoy! This info is the result of me reading a whole bunch of different posts and hacking it out for a couple hours on my own, so I hope that you a) find it useful and b) it works for you. I would like some feedback concerning mobility chipsets, because I don't have access to one and am curious as to the results therein.

usbcore                67776   1

So it's unused... Don't know why really I have everything enabled and disabled what should be enabled or disabled in my kernel. Also I emerged xfree-drm (otherwise the module wouldn't load obviously) my xf86config should be fine aswell :S (wich hasn't changed since my last post).

Badguy:

Could you maybe have gatos drivers installed? I think they are supposed to conflict with DRM, but I could be wrong. You seem to be loading the radeon module, and then an at module, which I believe could be gatos? This is sooo confusing, why can't ATI cards just work?

I know this is clutching at straws, but I think you are VERY clost to having it working! It just seems to be failing to load!

Yeah I got it to work it wheren't the gatos drivers (never even heard of those :D) But I think it was nog having DRI compiled in the kernel... All of the sudden it displayed directrendering: yes. Still I don't have many fps :S maybe it was a bit of a mem problem I'll start my lappy up asap to verify it :S

edit:
I must have had to many shrooms last night... Still not working (although I was sooooo sure :S)

@starwars:

It looks like Im using a different radeon driver than you.. mine has Nothing about framebuffer stuff.. when I tried to turn on that option, bad things happened. I do however have FB support in my kernel (for console) but Im pretty sure these are totally unrelated. If you are using the latest 'xfree-drm,' turn off any hints at FB in you XF86config? Im running out of ideas ;(

@everyone else: is there a good radeon driver (m7) that supports DRI AND framebuffer? When I try to turn the option on for framebuffer, xfree gets angry and says my driver doesnt support it... Can I do it through my other card (intel 840 I think) or does that not get used when I use AGP? Im not good with hardware..

I haven't got frame buffering to work yet neither something more has arisen like using dual display :S got another thread for that though. It seems I have something of gatos but I think that came with drm as I didn't specificly install those gato drivers (I did find a gatos message in my log) I don't think they conflict though...

Btw what does clash is framebuffer support for radeon in you kernel that should be off  but that's already said in this thread.

I'm going to try and download the latest dri drivers for my radeon see if it does something... and hopefully it won't waste my xfree-drm stuff :S

Woo! Thanks to dodecahedron's instructions I have gotten ati-drivers installed and working on my 9200. Glxgears spits out an fps of ~1700! But if run an 3d application for more than a few seconds the entire xserver, except for the mouse cursor, locks up and requires a hard reboot (control + alt + backspace doesn't even work). I can only get to the moon on the celestia demo :(

Not running 3d apps is stable though.

I just wanted to thank dodecahedron for his easy-to-follow instructions. THough it took me 2 trys to get it working, cuz the initial install had some old AGPGART, XFREE-DRM, and NVIDIA crap. So instead of trying to flush everything out, I used a Microsoft approach and did a clean install of everything.

Basically I just followed dodecahedron instructions for "newer" cards. and It worked with no fuss.

My system is:
CHIPSET: Intel 845GE
CPU: Pentium 4 @2.4GHz
VIDDY CARD: VisionTek Xstasy - Radeon 9500 PRO
XFREE86: 4.3.0
ATI-DRIVERS: 2.9.12

I did compile AGPGART and support for my chipset as a module, but I did NOT load them, so I am using the ATI driver's builtin AGP, and I did NOT emerge XFREE-DRM at all.

For "fglrxconfig" I used the defualt for everything I think.

'glxinfo' and the "/var/log/XFree96.0.log" reports all the goodies are turned on. Except I see that it seems that the drivers detect my RADEON 9500 PRO as a RADEON 9700. I suspect this has something to do with the fact that the 9700 and the 9500 are the same core (R300), so i wont worry too much about it.

'glxgears' = 3894fps KA-POW!!!!!

if anyone is interested in my Xfree86Config file, let me know and I'll post it.

anyone have any option flags i might set in my XFREE86 config file to crank out a few more FPS????

Cheers,
m

BTW, that was 'glxgears' = 3894fps @ 1600x1200 with 24bit depth.

Guys,

I am a little bit out of ideas here:
I have a Radeon 7000 VE/QY (same as stustill) and a flat panel (Dell 1702FP UltraSharp). I did exactly everything stustill wrote on May 19th (compiling vanilla kernel with MTTR, without DRM, emerging xfree-drm etc....).
When runnig startx I get a black screen with the mouse pointer in the middle. when Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, it says:

Symbol drmGetClient from module /usr/X1156/lib/modules/drivers/radeon_drv.o is unresolved!

If Driver "radeon" is replaced by Driver "vesa" (to have a basic X starting), I have the folowing error message:

(EE) VESA(0): No matching modes
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

I read a lot of different stuff about ati, and I tried a lot of tweaking during the last week, nothing works... Help!

here's my XF86Config file:

ricril, I noticed you have several things commented out in your XF86Config that probably shouldn't be.
Load "glx"
Load "dri"
Section "DRI"
Mode 0666
EndSection

This *could* be what is causing the problems, because the driver seems to be having issues where it wants to load drm. Just a thought.

sdball, do you have agp fastwrites enabled in your bios? In my experience, fastwrites=system crashes. The performance gain with current hardware is only like 2-3 fps, so it's just WAAAY not worth it.

As far as I know gatos drivers are the drivers that support my radeon and these get installed with xfree-drm. So it is impossible for it to make errors with dri as it was made for it. Atleast that's what I understand. It was true it loads gatos drivers but these are the ones that are included in dri thus the xfree-drm package

Dodecahedron:

Good call! I did indeed have fast writes enabled. Now things are much more stable but still end up crashing before too long. Continuing to use Celestia as an example: I was able to watch the entire demo and then explore the universe for a few minutes; then the screen locked just like before.

The strange thing is that the lockups aren't always the same. Sometimes the screen will freeze and sometimes the monitor will go black (and go into power saving mode, indicating a loss of signal).

I'm at a loss here. I wish I had a spare hd to run windows on so I could verify that the video card was working correctly.

BadGuy:

Gatos drivers (emerge ati-gatos) are drivers that support TV and stuff on radeon cards, they don't come with xfree-drm. I don't think they help much with 3D performance though.

Sounds like this file got erased. Check to see if there is a radeon_drv.o in that folder. If not, try getting it from someone with the same version of xfree. I ran into something similar down my path. emerge xfree-drm doesnt (I dont think) bring back this file, but reinstalling X did. You should hopefully be able to grab it from one of us (actuallly, I'll throw it on my server at:
www.manatee.servemp3.com/misc/radeon_drv.o )

[edit]
bizarre.. my path is X11R6, not X1156. I don't know what that means :) anyways, the file's there

Not bizarre, I'm installing on another machine, so I copy that line "by hand" and made a mistake.
Thanks for your input, I check it right now :D

Guy,

I do have a /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/radeon_drv.o

I uncommented
Load "glx"
Load "dri"
Section "DRI"
Mode 0666
EndSection
as suggested by Dodecahedron. When starting X, I have a black screen with the mouse pointer. The interresting stuff is that when I Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, I don't have an error message anymore.

What's going on? Should I go ahead and emerge gnome and see what happen?

If you're getting a black screen and a mouse pointer, then it sounds like X has started. Try launching an xterm. (Use CTRL-ALT-F1 to get to a console, log in, and issue a command like, "xterm -display :0.") Then run glxinfo and glxgears to get an idea of how you're doing. You may have it working fine.

ricil, have you looked at your /var/log/XF86.0.log ?

note: this is why phpBB needs thread support :)

Crowbert,
nothing happend when "xterm -display :0." is typed (it hangs without giving the prompt back).

guy,

here is one line of /var/log/XFree86.0.log:

Quote:
(WW) Open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) (No such a file or directory)

Is it a possible clue?
