1. A model ends with .ko or .o?
2. i dont have a file names pre-install, (I done locate pre-install and gut nothing), what am i suppose to do?

Thanks

-------------
I am using kernel 2.6.7-gentoo-r6
My grafic card is radeon 7500

1) because you are using a 2.6 kernel, your modules end with .ko
2) don't you have to put these lines with pre-install in a config file for the modules? i mean: isn't anything stated in your information source?

cheers, raist.

Hi there!

I've got some problems with the 3D performance of my ati

Here are my benchmarks:
glxgears: ~3900 fps
fgl_glxgears: ~700 fps

That's half the fps I suppose to have!

Here is my system:
2.6.7 vanilla-kernel
+
Code:
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: RADEON 9700 PRO Generic
OpenGL version string: 1.3 (X4.3.0-3.9.0)

All suspicious messages I have, are this one:
Code:
XFree86.0.log
(WW) Open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) (No such file or directory)
(WW) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:0:1) found

...and this one:
Code:
root:/home/thilo >/opt/ati/bin/fireglcontrol
Xlib: sequence lost (0x10000 > 0xa) in reply type 0x0!
X Error: 0 0
  Major opcode:  0
  Minor opcode:  0
  Resource id:  0x3f00000

fireglcontrol hangs up and I have to terminate it with ctrl+c

Any suggestion to my problem?

thx,

slyght

1) is not crucial
2) looks more interesting

what says
Code:
glxinfo
?

cheers, raist.

Well, before I installed gentoo, I had a red hat system... compared to that, the fps a really slow :/
Actually i wanted to play doom3 in future, you know?

btw, for the second warning i got ("(WW) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:0:1) found"): I believe it is, because I have a card which supports dual monitoring and I get this warning, because there isn't any second monitor... but dunno exactly...

Ok, here is, what glxinfo says:

They're in Unstable right now.

But they still don't help with my black screen problem.

I'm giving ATI two weeks to come up with a driver that works and then I'm selling this thing on eBay and getting a GeForce 6800.

I've just switched over from an nVidia to a Radeon X800 Pro. I succesfully emerge'd the 3.11.1 drivers (by forcing the ~86 testing ebuild)

I followed the instructions given at the odin website thingy, but to paraphrase:

1) uninstall nvidia driver
2) ensure agp gart module was available (I already knew it was since I used the kernel agp gart with my GF5900)
3) install the radeon drivers (emerge ati-drivers)
4) configure using xfireglwhateveritscalled

Now I have accelerated openGL (UT2004, Tuxracer, Armagetron, havent tested RTCW yet) and "BigDesktop" enabled (two monitors, one desktop).

Only quibbles are:

1) the nvidia driver knew how to drive the monitors at different resolutions (1600x1200 + 1280x1024) instead of 1280x1024 on both.

2) the nvidia driver also could use the Edid frequencies sent by the monitor, therefore I didn't have to know the technical stuff - I found out quickly enough though).

3) the nvidia driver is Xinerama aware, so I can maximise to a single window

4) the nvidia driver could handle playing multiple video streams simultaneously better...

Any comments on my quibbles?

Comments? How about this one: Why did you switch from Nvidia to ATI?! ATI's linux support is horrendous, and you'll never get your money's worth from your X800Pro in linux :(

:) A couple of reasons, the main one being I couldn't bring myself to buy a card that was so big and required two power connectors.

I mean - If your card runs that hot and is that big and requires two power connectors, when there is a competitor that produces a roughly equivalent single slot card that only requires a single power connector - then that tells me there is something inefficient with the card - solving the problem through brute force rather than elegance.

Second reason - I couldn't get a 6800 Ultra for love or money, whereas the X800 Pro was available.

I'm not too bothered regarding the 3D support in Linux - I would switch to my dual boot XP installation for that, but I do miss the better "Big Desktop" support, it makes development easier.

Is there another 2D only video driver that I could use that would be able to drive "Big Desktop" at 1600x1200 on the first monitor and 1280x1024 on the second? Any ideas anyone?

Thanks!

I have the same problem as Gzunk, that I want my TV as the second monitor, and use it to watch movies and such.

I have a Radeon 9600XT with TV-out

I have tried to set things right when using fglrxconfig, still the TV is forced to run @ a 1600*1200 resolution.

I tried to run both monitors @ 640*480 that works, but who wants to run your workspace at that res?

I tried the solution of having two diff config files, but when I exit X, everything just goes black, with or wíthout tv-out enabled.

any solutions, or should I prepare an email to the ppl at ATI??

thanks in advance

Gzunk, maybe I have an answer to your big desktop problem?

I got that to work, got one big desktop, with my TV as a satellite monitor, But I remember that to enable just another monitor you say Y to the tv-out option, and then some option about TV standard that I do not really know how to answer when it comes to a monitor, but for the TV I used 4) PAL-B.

Then choose option 4) again, "Big desktop"

choose layout

when it comes to monitor settings, perhaps 2) is a good choice?

then just choose hsync and vsync, for both monitors, then there is not so many q's left that needs any special thought I think, mainly just go with the defaults.

that is how I got it to work with my TV at least. Sorry if I post and explain something that you are already aware of...

anyway, my problem is still around, I cant get my TV to have a certain kind of resolution if I want two monitors, with one buffer each, ie not a Big Desktop solution.

bla bla bla....

/cheers

i get this message in the x logs

Well, how did you "roll back" the drivers? You should start by exiting X, then do:
Code:
rmmod fglrx
emerge =ati-drivers-3.9.0
modprobe fglrx

yea that's what i did to uninstall the 3.09 drivers. a little bit more extensive than that though i rmmod the module unemerged the drivers, installed the rpm based 3.11 drivers and restarted the comp. and the 3d accel. works fine for the 3.11 but when i rmmod emerge the 3.09 drivers and modprobe it into memory the 3d accel doesnt work anymore for the 3.09 drivers. if i reinstall the 3.11 drivers it works but no longer for the 3.09 ones. weird...

anyway this is the error i keep getting with the 3.09 drivers
Code:
(II) fglrx(0): Kernel Module Version Information:

(WW) fglrx(0): * no 3D acceleration available                *

and this is what i get while using the 3.11 drivers
Code:

I am actually wondering if anyone who has read all the 73 pages of this sticky could put a summary on the gentoo-wiki. I don't think 73 pages is still doable, and I don't think new readers are going to look through them all. Since this mostly is a support thread, I think the summary shouldn't be too long. It should contain all important and actual information, for instance how to install the drivers (in 3 or more different ways: fglrx, drm, at-drivers, ...), how to get good 3d results. I haven't read all of the 73 pages myself (far from it), so I'm not even sure if that's in here!

This is kind of a desperate :-) post, since there aren't (m)any general and good posts on ati on this forum. I will certainly help correct and give feedback!

Couldn't this be stimulated by some mods!!? They at least should realise that 73 pages isn't the way to go...

Thanx

fglrx and ati-drivers are the same thing. I have some install instructions and other bits and pieces in my FAQ (see sig). It's only for the ATI binary driver (ie fglrx/ati-drivers) but it should contain most of the relevant stuff from this thread already.

Thanks in advance for any help:

I'm trying to install 2004.2 on a Dell Inspirion XPS with a Radeon 9800 Mobility.

I can't seem to get any video.

I have run:
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge ati-drivers
opengl-update ati
fglrxconfig

When I run startx, thescreen flickers for a second, then I just get a solid black screen.

I don't see any errors in /var/log/Xorg.log.

Any ideas?

Thanks again

Alright I just had the same problem as you but I managed to fix it!!!!

What you need to do is go into your BIOS and change your AGP Aperture to 128, and then go to "PCI IRQ Assignment" and re-arrange your IRQ's around so that your Radeon is NOT sharing any IRQ's (well of course, it will have to share one at least with the USB)! This resolved it for me! I am so happy :D

Same problem here, but this doesnt help me :(

I changed the Aperture size to 128 and checked my IRQs looks like Display Device and USB are at the same IRQ (IRQ 5) as you said but it still doesnt work.

Check this thread, https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=188844 there some more people with the same problem. Seems to be a problem between ATI-shitty drivers and Asus hardware.

Finally some success, I had a simmilar problem as above but on drastically different hardware, I finally resolved my problem by going to the latest (2.6.8) kernel. I then followed the faq linked in that guys sig just above and poof like it was ment to work.
my hardware:
AMD 1.4
ABit KT7A
Radeon 9600XT

good luck

Still no luck here.

I think my new Radeon Mobility 9800 chip just isn't supported yet.

When I run fglrxconfig, it lists the supported cards and mine isn't there.

Everything in /var/log/Xorg.0.log looks good. It even says
Direct rendering enabled.

fglrx also appears to identify the chipset as
ATI R420 JN (Chipset = 0x4a4e)

But as soon as X starts, it is just solid black. No error, just black. I can still kill it with ctrl-alt-backspace.

I posted a question to ATI, but I haven't heard anything.

Does anyone know how I can find out which WindowManager startx is launching? Is it in /etc/X11/xinit?

Thanks for any advice....
