Hi, I installed both net-wireless/b43-fwcutter and net-wireless/bcm43xx-fwcutter to get my mac-mini wifi working.

Here are some infos:

Linux 2.6.29-gentoo-r3 #1 ppc 7447A, altivec supported PowerMac10,1 GNU/Linux

From DMesg:

b43 ssb0:0: firmware: requesting b43/ucode5.fw
b43-phy0 ERROR: Firmware file "b43/ucode5.fw" not found
b43-phy0 ERROR: You must go to http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/b43#devicefirmware and download the latest firmware (version 4).

ifconfig:

wlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:11:24:96:26:be
BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)

wmaster0 Link encap:UNSPEC HWaddr 00-11-24-96-26-BE-10-0D-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00

TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0

I know I'm close, what's missing?
Thanks for the help!

Exactly as the kernel says, you need to install the firmware for the card.

For the Mac-Mini G4 you need the b43-fwcutter only. Then follow the instructions on http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/b43#fw-b43-new.

Hi,
I'm running 2.6.27-gentoo-r8, wpa_supplicant-0.6.9 on the BCM4318 with WPA2-PSK/CCMP. First I tried latest firmware broadcom-wl-4.150.10.5 and got lots of logs like
Code:
[kernel] b43-phy0 ERROR: PHY transmission error
though it is working fine.

Then I read in the Ubuntu forums that broadcom-wl-4.80.53.0 would fix this and it's true. Is there anything about running the older firmware even with kernel 2.6.27? Has anyone noticed the same?

I had the same issues and messages in my logs. No, actually it was even worse. The card would randomly disconnect from the AP and not reconnect. After some months and getting more and more annoyed, I found out that It was a setting which I had added some time ago to the module options for b43:
Code:
options b43 hwpctl=1

This is better left as it normally is, default is off, hence disabling the hardware power management. For what it is worth, it is working now like a charm and I have had no dropped connections since then.

I suppose the b43 guys know what they are talking about. So I always stick to what they are suggesting and therefore I am still using the 4.150.10.5 firmware.

Cheers,
Thomas

So far, no news about that. I just drop the kernel messages with metalog:
/etc/metalog.conf:
Dropped kernel messages :

   facility  = "kern"
   regex     = "Setting specified fan speed"
   regex     = "Adjusting limits by"
   regex     = "b43-phy0 ERROR"
   command   = "echo"
   break     = 1

Any other idea for dropping log messages than "echo"?

the problem seems to be gone with
gentoo-sources-2.6.32-r1

Code:
CONFIG_B43=m
CONFIG_B43_PCI_AUTOSELECT=y
CONFIG_B43_PCICORE_AUTOSELECT=y
# CONFIG_B43_PCMCIA is not set
# CONFIG_B43_PHY_LP is not set
CONFIG_B43_LEDS=y
CONFIG_B43_HWRNG=y
# CONFIG_B43_DEBUG is not set
# CONFIG_B43LEGACY is not set
CONFIG_SSB_B43_PCI_BRIDGE=y
