Hello,
First I want to thank you for your work on the native support of broadcom chipsets under linux. Thanx!
Second I would like you to ask for help. I am using kernel 2.6.21 suspend2 sources r6 and I am able to connect to WEP protected AP. Now I tried to connect to WPA protected AP which I have in my house. Well not much luck. I am able to associate via wpa supplicant but only for short moment. Signal is sufficient I think becouse I am in 3m distance.

I'm testing b43 from wireless git. There is big progress over softmac. I'm sharing network with my friend and signal is weak. I couldn't connect with softmac version, only when i was at his place.

With mac80211 it connects in seconds and it is stable. Only speed doesn't go to max 125kilobytes like with ndiswrapper, max is about 50.
And powertop wakeups are much better than with ndiswrapper and bcm43xx.

Hi, ALL,
The first page with the instructions to install this driver still refers to the MAC setup.
Is there a plan to update this with the 802.11 without MAC?

Thank you.

ONEEYEMAN:
If you're referring to the mac80211 port, then when it's accepted upstream (2.6.24 probably) I'll update the instructions. :)

I would like to inform that my dell truemobile 1400 mini-PCI

Code:

akub jakub # lspci -n | grep 14e4:43
02:03.0 0280: 14e4:4324 (rev 02)

on kernel 2.6.22.2 is working like a charm witch no patches or something, even witch NetworkManager on WPA2-PSK AES secured network

so thanks for work to all developers

greetings, Jakub

but it works well only in b mode, in g mode it connects only at 24Mb/s but ping reply are at thousands of ms

That's working as well as the bcm43xx driver is ever going to. However, the b43 driver has just been marked for inclusion in the 2.6.24 kernel. Once 2.6.24_rc1 is released, I'll update these instructions for the b43 driver. The b43 driver is the fork that uses the mac80211 stack instead of the SoftMAC stack and also basically has been the development version of bcm43xx for the past few kernel releases. I'm happy to report that the bcm4318 works quite well with the new stack/driver, approaching OSX speeds and signal strength. :)

I git-cloned wireless-dev last night. But there seems to be no b43 driver. What am I doing wrong?

You need to switch to the "everything" branch of wireless-dev for b43.

As for a tutorial, I will write instructions when 2.6.24_rc1 is released. b43 has been pulled for inclusion, so it will definitely be in 2.6.24.

Thanks for the help. After some trying it worked. I also installed b43-fwcutter. Is it still necessary to use wpa_supplicant with the new stack?

Well, it was never required if you didn't want to use WPA networks. But if you do, then yes, wpa_supplicant is still required. The stack functionally is similar to SoftMAC, just much more robust and future-proof.

Of course I want to use WPA ;-)

The supplicant works like it did with Softmac before, but it gives an error on start:
Code:

* Bringing up interface wlan0
 *   Starting wpa_supplicant on wlan0 ...
ioctl[SIOCSIWAUTH]: Operation not supported
WEXT auth param 4 value 0x0 - ioctl[SIOCSIWAUTH]: Operation not supported       [ ok ]uth param 5 value 0x1 -
 *   Starting wpa_cli on wlan0 ...                                        [ ok ]
 *   Backgrounding ... ...

This occurs with the stable as well as with the unstable version from portage.

Has there been any change with the 4311 Rev 02 card? Will this card be supported in 2.6.24?

No, current work has been focused on getting the b43 driver ready for mainline. For already supported cards, this means better transfer rates and better TX power, along with greater stability and functionality. Once this work is completed (for .24) we can start looking into the new PHYs.

It works fine for lots of people. Try it and see. The version included in the upcoming 2.6.24 kernel will offer the best performance.

PostPosted: Tue Oct 09, 2007 10:32 pm    Post subject: bcm43xx perfomance issue with 2.6.21-2 Reply with quote

Hi!

I recently tried to install 2007.0 on an imac G5 which has a BCM4306 Rev03 (or so lspci reports)
I'm experiencing some problems with the wireless and after a couple of days I have run out of ideas.

In short, the bcm43xx driver is working nicely, but the performance is being terrible.

With kernel 2.6.21 (-r4) it starts working great (up to 300KB/s) but after some seconds it drops to speeds of 1-10KB
With kernel 2.6.22 (-r5) it always works at speeds of just 1-10KB.

Changing the device speed via iwconfig eth1 rate has no effect.
Has anyone experienced a similar problem? Googling didn't return any similar cases to me..

Configuration is either manual or via wpa_supplicant. Both cases give the same result

Here is a dmesg output of what I see during operation.
This is with a 2.6.21 kernel, unpatched (the ftp seems to be currently down??)

The last set of messages repeats every couple of seconds.
With kernel 2.6.22 I see the same set of messages.
Reloading the bcm43xx module or restarting wpa_supplicant has no special effect:
i.e. with 2.6.21 I get some seconds of high speed while 2.6.22 always stays at just 1-10 KB

I hope you can give me advice as to what to try next.
I'm a little desperate already :)

It works fine for lots of people. Try it and see. The version included in the upcoming 2.6.24 kernel will offer the best performance.

You need to switch to the "everything" branch of wireless-dev for b43.

As for a tutorial, I will write instructions when 2.6.24_rc1 is released. b43 has been pulled for inclusion, so it will definitely be in 2.6.24.

There is a way to add b43 as a module to kernel 2.6.22 or 2.6.23?
I'm searching since yesterday but I can't find...

Nope, get 2.6.24 when it's available.

izzu:
That's a more recent 4306. We've had some reports of issues with speed on really early 4306 boards, but not with those. I'd also try again with 2.6.24 when it's available, the new b43 driver should help with your speed/reliability issues. The simple rate transitioning algorithm included with b43 should also help with reliability, especially under low signal strength conditions.
