My former Linux distro (MDK8.2) had a Windows 2000-like progress bar boot process.

Is there a way to hide/unhide Gentoo kernel messages during the boot process so as to give a more polished boot?

Thanks.

Last I checked that project wasn't really of any use to anyone running a 2.4 kernel that was worth anything. The patch wouldn't go in clean on a 2.4.18 kernel (from kernel.org) so that pretty much means it's worthless.

Not so much "worthless" as "in need of coaxing". ;)

Also, I hear Redflag Linux (the official distro of communist China) does this.

I wonder if everyone going over to 2.5+ kernels would coax them enough? lol

I think even debian is close to migrating totally over to 2.4 soon... now that in itself tells you that anything before 2.4 is a lost cause for mainstream.

I've been looking for something like this myself. My system works fine 99.9% of the time, and it would be cool to have something like that (or hell, even the splashscreen like Windows 95/98 or 2000 have with the bar) on screen to make it look better on boot.

It doesn't make anyone want to switch any sooner when I show them a blog of system code on the screen when you start it. (thats what it looks like to them)

Okay,

I contacted the author (?) of the Linux Progress Patch via email, because I was really wanting this. He said that you can pick up the patch for 2.4.18 at ftp://oss.gonicus.de/pub/goto

(choose the 2.4.18 selection)

I just patched my 2.4.18 vanilla kernel with "bunzip2 linux-goto-patch-2.4.18-1.bz2 ; patch -p0 < linux-goto-patch-2.4.18-1" in the /usr/src directory. Of course you'd need the bz2 file there too :)

Now, I haven't done anything with it yet. I'll mess with it tomorrow, but I wanted to let ya all know that.

PLEASE backup your /usr/src/linux-* directory before applying the patch. It'll make life easier in case it doesn't go in smooth for some reason...
