I read the gentoo planet. Lately, I've been reading about issues, and angst, and hurt feelings.

It seems that one feeling is "what is wrong with Gentoo?".

Well, maybe I can put things into perspective, albeit, only as one of the *USERS*.

First, I don't know any Gentoo developers, I have never meet any, and thus am very much an outsider.

HOWEVER, I have been a professional software developer, for going on twenty years now.

IMO, Gentoo, as a distribution, is a very large, yet high quality distribution. Quality in a software base of this size is very difficult.

Please, do NOT let some ailing trees, in an otherwise very large and healthy forest, blind any of you to that overall situation, OK?

Yes, I use stable, and yes I update my workstation with: "emerge -DNuvp", review and then usually: "emerge -DNu".

Ya know what? THE software WORKS and it works WELL. This is despite the portage tree being massive, and offering a wonderful selection of software, all ready for our, *WE the users*, use.

From my heart, THANK YOU for all the hard work, each and every one of you, for the commitment, energy and enthusiasm, that Gentoo reveals that you folks have.

Maybe if I could kick this world of warcraft habit, I'd get involved myself... in any event, peace and I hope the fun is still happening.

PS: In my experience, when I'm yelling, or being yelled at, it is because I CARE, because I am engaged in the situation, fully.

This thought helps me calm down in such situations, sometimes... :)

Absolutely...Gentoo is an incredibly stable distro given it's size and flexibility. The devs work miracles as far as I'm concerned. If it weren't for reading stuff here I'd certainly never think there was any problem based on using/updating my two Gentoo machines.

Agreed, the devs' work is appreciated greatly. Good job. You guys/gals rock, otherwise how could Gentoo be that good? Drop by drop, their efforts give life to this deep Gentoo sea. I am enjoying swimming in this vast sea - and never thought of quitting.

Yeah personally I haven't had any major probs. A couple of large compiles, a few blockers etc and that's it. And what a distro!

I agree.

I have had more problems with the portage alternatives than I have had with portage itself.

I have tried fedora, ubuntu, debian, and slackware and portage is so far the best system for managing packages.

emerge works, it may be hack upon hack, but who cares if it works? It's stable.

That about sums up my thoughts too. Thanks to the devs for such a great and configurable distro.

Mandrake was my first distro. I used it about 6 months. It was slow and somewhat buggy for me. After upgrading one time, I was done. I have installed Mandriva about 6 months ago for a temp install. It worked OK but still not like Gentoo, not even close.

I think I am hooked on Gentoo. I haven't learned all I need to know about Gentoo in the past four years so starting over with another distro is just not in my game plan any time in the future.

It's a great distro, great community, and I like it.

gentoo works out of the box much better than that ubuntu shit.
i`ve tried ubuntu + apache , ubuntu + lighttpd . first time php didn`t work , second time php worked but vhosts didn`t .
on gentoo lighttpd worked superbly . without any headache.
gentoo rocks

I agree. The only thing I like about Mandr(ake|iva) is that it installs pretty fast. It's good if you need something temporary and quick.

I did have to install it about a year ago though. It was a lot better than what it was a long time ago. It was still slow though. It is also why I switched to Gentoo. I wanted out of there. The upgrade process was a nightmare.

My $0.02 worth which ain't worth more than that either.
