freke,

You can drop all the -mno-* options.
Try
Code:
gcc -### -E - -march=native 2>&1 | sed -r '/cc1/!d;s/(")|(^.* - )|( -mno-[^\ ]+)//g'

Thanks Neddy for all your explanations on this page, its very helpful.

That's an awful lot of USE flags. In your post, you should seriously edit what you posted in from your make.conf. For what it's worth, here are my USE flags on my primary desktop, and probably more than I need:
Code:
USE="apache2 directfb dv gimp mplayer live mozilla oss nas postscript scanner rtc subtitles v4l xine xscreensaver -pulseaudio -gnome -kde -eds -libav -thin -bluetooth -systemd -consolekit -policykit -spidermonkey -libproxy linguas_en linguas_en_US"

Notice the profile, minimal use flags are set by default. Thanks for the advice, genuinely, but Gentoo for me is all about the use flags and portage, I like the tight control - the result is exactly what I'm looking for, personally.

32GB, Chromium is the only thing that exhausts it so I use -j8 for that specifically.

Do you actually see an improvement if j?? is more than the number of cores/threads that you have ?

What's the biggest -j?? with which you are able to emerge chromium -- then just set that and forget it, i.e. -j12, 13, 14, 15

Never tested it because I read that could actually be detrimental to compile times, and with this many cores/threads it's already blazing fast. :)

I guess I could up the amount of jobs a bit, but I chose to stick with -j8 to be able to do other things while keeping responsiveness as I don't compile overnight.

How do folks handle the USE flag ABI_X86? I thought I read a news item that says it should be added to make.conf. Right now I don't have it, but my package.use is full of packages with just the 32 flag: >=app-arch/bzip2-1.0.6-r7 abi_x86_32.

I saw someone's make.conf had ABI_X86="64 32" and I tried that - wants to rebuild 90 packages to add the "64". If I delete a package from the package.use file without ABI_X89 set in make.conf and see what happens, is this:
Code:
# emerge -pv -NU @world

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!

Total: 0 packages, Size of downloads: 0 KiB

WARNING: One or more updates/rebuilds have been skipped due to a dependency conflict:

  (app-arch/bzip2-1.0.8-r1:0/1::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) USE="(split-usr) static-libs -static" ABI_X86="(64) -32 (-x32)" conflicts with
    >=app-arch/bzip2-1.0.6-r4[abi_x86_32(-),abi_x86_64(-)] required by (media-libs/freetype-2.10.4:2/2::gentoo, installed) USE="X adobe-cff bzip2 cleartype_hinting png -bindist -brotli -debug -doc -fontforge -harfbuzz -infinality -static-libs -utils" ABI_X86="32 (64) (-x32)"

Trying to clean things up a bit and wondering best practices. Slow machine so hate to rebuild with both 64 and 32 libraries, but will if necessary. thx

[edit] This is an ~amd64 system. Thinking of moving back to stable just to have to spend less time on things, it seems.

I definitely don't have an ABI USE flag in my make.conf or package.use. However, emerge --info shows that USE ABI_X86="64" is set, probably via the profile. I'm running stable amd64, amd64/17.1/desktop profile, and multilib, thought I don't think I have any 32 bit packages.

If there was a news item recently directing or suggesting ABI_X86 be set in make.conf (I don't remember such) I must have determined it did not apply to me. I pretty much read and obey the news, not blindly, but at least attentively.

I heartily commend the idea of running stable. I only have seven packages in package.accept_keywords which amounts to three silly little games, img2pdf which doesn't have a stable version, two iscan packages for my scanner (local repo), and mousepad-0.5.1 (local repo) to avoid a bug in the 0.5.2 version. I rarely have an issue related to portage.

I'm starting to agree. I am getting old and time is becoming more valuable. But I may do it the slow way, to avoid having to reinstall everything. I found this and may try it:

How do folks handle the USE flag ABI_X86? I thought I read a news item that says it should be added to make.conf. Right now I don't have it, but my package.use is full of packages with just the 32 flag: >=app-arch/bzip2-1.0.6-r7 abi_x86_32.

I dump all of my abi_x86_32 into one file so I know exactly what packages require it

Thanks - I'll do that for now. Makes sense - I should have thought of it.
