I've spent many weeks getting gentoo just the way i want it, now i dont want to lose it.
if i make a backup of the entire system onto a dvd-r, is it possible to restore the system from it? |

The difficulty would be making the system bootable. But it is certainly restorable. You might look at mondo-rescue, or you could take a live cd mount it as a loopback and then put all the stuff you wanted on it (There is a thread that gives some details on how you can do this to customize a live cd). (Perhaps even as tarballs) so if anything broke you could use the live cd to just untar on top of the previous system. |
