Posted: Sat Feb 10, 2007 11:33 pm Post subject: ALSA - broken? |
|
|
I am challenged in getting ALSA to work on my one machine. ... I would sure appreciate any advise /help.
I have tried both in kernel and out of kernel. I get different errors, but no luck getting a sound driver loaded.
In BIOS, I turned off the built in AC-97 and it no longer appears in lspci. I only have a PCI audio card made by C-Media.
| Code: |
# uname -r
2.6.19-gentoo-r5
# lspci
00:07.0 Multimedia audio controller: C-Media Electronics Inc CM8738 (rev 10)
|
The current alsa-driver is media-sound/alsa-driver-1.0.14_rc1
and the kernel version appears to one less, Version 1.0.13
When I used alsa-driver some parts did load, like MIDI.
but the driver for my sound card still does not load:
| Code: |
# cat /etc/modules.d/alsa
# ALSA portion
alias char-major-116 snd
alias snd-card-0 snd-cmipci
# module options should go here
# OSS/Free portion
alias char-major-14 soundcore
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
# card #1
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
|
If I select only
| Code: |
make menuconfig
<M> Sound card support
x x Advanced Linux Sound Architecture --->
<M> Advanced Linux Sound Architecture
|
and nothing else, I am not able to emerge alsa-driver. A conflict prohibits the emerge.
But my understanding from the HOW-TO/WIKI on ALSA says this should work!?! The general comment on most ALSA problems is to just load it into the kernel...
but in my case that case is not working, either... (Ive tried that, too...)
Same thing happens with just the top level selected. I'm only successful emerging alsa-driver with no sound support in the kernel...
Then go back and built a new kernel with just the above selected... and even then the sound card will still not load. but parts load...(like midi)
and I get the messages about conflicts..etc.. I think of the conflict messages were regarding the two different versions of ALSA, (13 vs 14.rc1)
With this version of gentoo-sources, which version of alsa works?
Right now, I have everything selected to load in the kernel.
and the only diagnostic message is about no sound card present... (dmesg below)
I'd like to force an earlier version of alsa-driver since this version has problem with this kernel version.
I'm not sure how to force the package to stay at release rev 13. ... going back to read some more on use packages...
just a little perplexed and frustrated at this problem.
make menuconfig for sound and alsa:
| Code: |

Below is my DMESG. Its kind of weird, I disabled the motherbaord AC97 in BIOS, but it still shows up in the DMESG.
and it does not show up with lspci command. This dmesg is from the kernel with everything selected in menuconfig.
I am not sure I understand what the device mapper errors mean towards the end of the dmesg.

that certainly can't be good. try recompiling your sound card driver as a module, and build-in sound and alsa support.

To use the alsa-driver package make the following kernel selections
| Code: | <*> Sound card support
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture --->
Open Sound System ---> |
| Code: | | < > Advanced Linux Sound Architecture |
| Code: | | < > Open Sound System (DEPRECATED) |
To force the package to stay at release rev 13 add to /etc/portage/package.mask
| Code: | >media-sound/alsa-headers-1.0.13
>media-sound/alsa-driver-1.0.13
>media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.13
>media-sound/alsa-utils-1.0.13

thanks everyone.
jburns, I tried this... this is what I wanted to try... keeping everything at .13 release...
I rebuilt my kernel and just rebooted .. and attempted to emerge alsa-driver.
It tried to emerge alsa-driver release 13...
| Code: |
# emerge -p alsa-driver
These are the packages that would be merged, in order:
Calculating dependencies... done!

I get this error... something about incompatible pointer type
what causes this? what can I do to correct?

I tried emerge -d alsa-diver
this is the beginning of the first error... something to do with jiffies_to_msec and msec_to_jiffies
does this mean anything to anyone?

ok, I went to an older version of the kernel...
2.6.18-gentoo-r6 with module alsa-driver 1.0.13
Everything works as advertised... all of the modules load...
So, there really are a couple of bugs involving the most recent ALSA and kernel, which are both masked as mainstream release on x86.
kernel 2.6.19-r5 can not support kernel ALSA 1.0.13 or with either module versions, 1.0.14.rc1or module 1.0.13. with my sound card...
I'm not sure if the problem is ALSA or has more to do with the kernel...
whats the next step?

| Quote: | jburns, I tried this... this is what I wanted to try... keeping everything at .13 release...
I rebuilt my kernel and just rebooted .. and attempted to emerge alsa-driver.
It tried to emerge alsa-driver release 13...

I looked at my old build logs and found the same error for media-sound:alsa-driver-1.0.13 when I updated to the sys-kernel:gentoo-sources-2.6.19-r2 kernel. The problem was fixed by updating to the latest version of alsa. |

you're saying you have success with sys-kernel:gentoo-sources-2.6.19-r2
and media-sound:alsa-driver-1.0.14.rc1? but not ALSA alsa-driver-1.0.13 ?
I didnt have success with either release of ALSA and that kernel train.. gentoo-sources-2.6.19-r5 is the only one I tried.. |

and went back to asla driver alsa-driver-1.0.14_rc1 ...
rebooted and the sound driver for my card loaded...
I guess I was doing something wrong before.?!? ... and now everything is properly aligned... ?!?!
any ways, its working ....
thanks, sorry. |
