I'm having trouble getting this to work:

Code:

glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
X Error of failed request:  BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)
  Major opcode of failed request:  159 (GLX)
  Minor opcode of failed request:  3 (X_GLXCreateContext)
  Serial number of failed request:  19
  Current serial number in output stream:  20

The only error I get on the log is (only relevant info copied):

Code:

Yeah, I'm not alone :D

Got the same issue on a new install and posted the question in the modular xorg thread. No answer unfortunately.

Okay, so I created a thread about this and nobody answered. So I went ahead and tried the latest CVS, following your steps, and I got the exact same results as I did before. Following is the post that I created about it:
Quote:

Hey all. With the release of X.org 7.0.0, I decided I was going to make the fairly steep leap up from X.org 6.8.2. I had heard that great progress had been made on the r300 Radeon driver, so I also decided to use it instead of fglrx. I had working DRI with fglrx; now, I got nothin'. The radeon and drm modules both load; X.org does start; but direct rendering is disabled. It appears that the modules are not creating the node /dev/dri/card0. My questions are as follows:
1) Has anyone gotten a relatively recent ATi PCIe card to work with 3D acceleration and the open-source driver on modular X? If so, how?
2) Does anyone know anything about the problem I am getting? How can I fix it?
For reference's sake, I have an AMD64 system running a pure 64-bit Gentoo install, X.org 7.0.0_rc4, and an ATi Radeon Xpress 200M (it is supported by the radeon driver).

The exact error the log returns is a series of
Quote:

drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (No such device)
drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (No such device)
drmOpenDevice: Open failed
drmOpenMinor returns -1023

Followed by a series of the same, but drmGetBusid instead of drmOpenMinor. Also, my dmesg shows next to no output from the drm/radeon modules, only a message acknowledging that the drm module loaded.
Quote:
Dec 22 17:43:54 snorlax [drm] Initialized drm 1.0.0 20040925

Note that it *does* work in 2D-only mode. Please tell me I'm not completely delusional, and that someone did get a PCIe ATI card running with the open-source driver. *crosses fingers*

This one is not working with the r300 driver yet. The following post can be found in the dri mail archive.
Quote:
Well, the XPRESS chips are PCIE, however they do not have discrete
videoram, so they may need additional tweaks to get the DRI working on
them. Unfortunately, we have no documentation on the XPRESS chips. I
suspect there's an issue with where/how you set up the PCIE GART with
integrated chips. You best bet is to run fglrx on it and dump the
registers to see how ati sets the card up.

I saw your question on the list a few minutes ago. Good luck :wink:

I've completly forgot a important step.
You need to install first libtxc_dxtn (WARNING :Depending on where you live, you might need a valid license for s3tc in order to be legally allowed to use the external library).

This will give a speedup to S3tc textures, probably more playable game speed.
Please install it first, then Mesa.

It's just unpack; type:
make
make install (as root)

That's all for now... Happy christmas

Why install it first? Is the order important to make Mesa work better? Does it cause trouble if I install it after?

i recompiled mesa after installing the s3tc library and the r300_dri.so binary was exactly the same as before.

Addendum: r300_dri.so contains a reference to the s3tc library, i guess you can install the library after mesa and it gets automagically used

You're right, after a little diggin in mesa, i found that if library is not found dri want use it.

If you compile and install it would work well, but i've always compiled first the lib.

May I suggest changing the line:

cp *.ko /lib/modules/{kernel_version}/kernel/drivers/char/drm

in the kernel module section to:

cp *.ko /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/char/drm

to make copy and pasting a bit easier.

Fixed - I have not used the guide myself for some time (my old installation is working perfectly) so I will perhaps need to check it again to see if it is still working.

You are not doing nothing wrong probaly your card isn't supported yet.

By the way if you notest your error is about the ram in your card not being properly detected.
Last commit in cvs appears, to revert some changes made, that make xorg doesn't recognyze memory in grapihc board.
Give it a try, :)

But if it didn't work don't be surprise :X

Just followed the howto, using a 6.9 xorg ebuild from https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-396898.html
I am on amd64 and have a 9600XT board
Can't manage to get direct rendering
What information would be important that i sent so as to you know what the problem may be?

Xorg.log

Dmesg

LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose glxinfo

At least this three.

P.S:
Check links, in your mesa-cvs dir, to extensions and include

I have continued investigating and already I have DRI!!!!!

I tell you, has been enough to me with modifying the files:

***Updated***

/usr/src/r300/drm/linux-core/drm_pciids.h
Code:

#define radeon_PCI_IDS \
   {0x1002, 0x4136, PCI_ANY_ID, PCI_ANY_ID, 0, 0, CHIP_RS100|CHIP_IS_IGP}, \
   {0x1002, 0x4137, PCI_ANY_ID, PCI_ANY_ID, 0, 0, CHIP_RS200|CHIP_IS_IGP}, \
.........................
   {0x1002, 0x5e4b, PCI_ANY_ID, PCI_ANY_ID, 0, 0, CHIP_R420}, \
   {0x1002, 0x3150, PCI_ANY_ID, PCI_ANY_ID, 0, 0, CHIP_RV380|CHIP_IS_MOBILITY|CHIP_IS_PCIE}, \ //Added by me
   {0, 0, 0}
...........

/usr/src/r300/drm/linux-core/radeon_drv.h
Code:

#define DRIVER_PATCHLEVEL   0

enum radeon_family {
   CHIP_R100,
.............
   CHIP_R420,
   CHIP_RV380, //Added by me
   CHIP_LAST,
};

enum radeon_cp_microcode_version {
   UCODE_R100,
..............

/usr/src/r300/Mesa/src/mesa/drivers/dri/radeon/radeon_chipset.h
Code:

................
#define PCI_CHIP_RV280_5C61      0x5C61
#define PCI_CHIP_RV280_5C63      0x5C63

#define PCI_CHIP_RV380_3150      0x3150 //Added by me

enum {
   CHIP_FAMILY_R100,
   CHIP_FAMILY_RV100,
.................

/usr/src/r300/Mesa/src/mesa/drivers/dri/radeon/radeon_screen.c
Code:

...........
   case PCI_CHIP_RV370_5B60:
   case PCI_CHIP_RV370_5B62:
   case PCI_CHIP_RV370_5B64:
   case PCI_CHIP_RV370_5B65:
   case PCI_CHIP_RV380_3150: //Added by me
      screen->chip_family = CHIP_FAMILY_RV380;
      screen->chip_flags = RADEON_CHIPSET_TCL;
      break;

   case PCI_CHIP_R420_JN:
   case PCI_CHIP_R420_JH:
..............

/usr/src/r300/Mesa/src/mesa/drivers/dri/radeon/server/radeon_dri.c
Code:

   info->ChipFamily = CHIP_FAMILY_RV280;
        break;

    case PCI_CHIP_R300_ND:
    case PCI_CHIP_R300_NE:
    case PCI_CHIP_R300_NF:
    case PCI_CHIP_R300_NG:
   case PCI_CHIP_RV380_3150: //Added by me
   info->ChipFamily = CHIP_FAMILY_R300;
        break;

    default:
   /* Original Radeon/7200 */
   info->ChipFamily = CHIP_FAMILY_RADEON;
    }

What happens it is that far from it it approaches frames per second that with himself with fglrx (thing that on the other hand hoped) but my tests have been to tuxracer and glxgears, and glxgears is not very trustworthy since I such obtain FPS with DRI that without DRI although is observed yield with DRI much more.

My questions are these:
1. There is some tool to prove the yield?
2. What is necessary to make to inform to the developers of DRI for r300 of my results and that include my small changes in the CVS?

Thanks and HAPPY YEAR!

Congrats for resolving your problem, to notify, r300 devel you could:
- fill a bugzilla, at bugs.freedesktop.org
- Or subscribe at dri-devel mailing list (http://sourceforge.net/mail/?group_id=387), and send your patchs to dri-devel

By the way, try to put the xorg,conf options that appear in the tutorial and add also, the lib_dxtn (see in anteriror posts), and try to put in Xorg.conf

Option "ColorTiling" "True"

Happy New Year...

r300 dri and software suspend2.

Does anyone has experiment with that?

Latest suspend2 rc14 and rc15 doesnt work for me neither with kernel 2.6.14 and 2.6.15-rc7.

What do you think, what packages should I recompile and reinstall in X and DRI related drivers,
anything (??) if I change kernel version? What depends on it? I fear that some kernel depending
X part or DRI part is making my suspend2 broken! So any ideas, what reinstall should I do to
make it work again?

With suspend2 rc13 it works well with DRI and suspend/resume with suspend2, rc14 and rc15 suspend2
only works without DRI enabled... so I suspect some dependency problem arose
because of the kernel upgrade. Any help appreciated!

Aftter a twice emerge -e world, and nothing more, I managed to get direct rendering
The performance is a third of the closed-source drivers, but I don't think I need more performance than this right now. Will test more and post here.

I tested composite, and the performance is very weak. I am using kde 3.5.
no change on glxgears performance with composite on or off
How is composite's performance on your computers?

Render is not yet accelerated in the r300 driver.

More DRM changes, time for PCIExpress users try it again. I must admit that much has to be done yet, but give it another try.

Uh, good news, I'll try it!

EDIT: still doesn't work for my Mobility Radeon X700 PCIExpress card :(
