I have exactly the same thoughts, so I think it's qt related... Recently I noticed that the latest version of qr (3.3. , according the changelog ( http://www.trolltech.com/developer/notes/changes/changes-3.3.8), fixed some memory leaks. Would be nice to hear some responces of gnome/gtk users. |

I am using gnome - and I am not quite sure if I have this memory leak or not. X sometimes is using up to 300 MB here, posted earlier about my experiences, with no really conclusion.
Machine is up now for 2 days with X having a memory load of ~60MB. To me X memory usage increases in jumps of 20MB discontinuously when Amarok is running. There is really no hint how or why this happens.
My careful statement for the moment: It seems that the memory usage is growing slower, without having any kde apps running. Memory usage is NOT growing, when logged in in gnome browsing the web with firefox or reading mails with thunderbird. I've beryl-svn running too.
I'll keep my machine running like this till tomorrow morning and then start using kde programms.
I'll have an eye on this and keep you informed.

I stopped superkaramba and X has been at about 7.5% of memory for 2 days.
Now - is this a bug in superkaramba or in X? Others in this thread have said that the problem goes away with earlier versions of X. |
Sorry but I spoke too soon...X is now growing much more slowly on my box, but it is still growing. |

| I am just wondering if upgrade to qt-3.3.8 has solved the problem with the memory leak. Can anyone confirm? I can't upgrade to 3.3.8 because mythtv starts to segv if I do that for some strange reason. |

| I'm not entirely convinced it's solely the fault of Qt. I have been noticing symptoms of this on my machine (though the leak is slow). I tried running in dwm for a few days, but there were a few Qt apps I couldn't live without. I didn't notice any leakage, though my testing is by no means definitive. |

I'm having bad memory leakage problems with X too and I don't even have qt isntalled (using xfce/gtk). It might be composite extension related as I don't have the same problem on my laptop and leaking rate seems to increase when I have transparent windows open. Haven't had time to test that theory yet though. _________________ [Gentoo 64b][ASRock ALIVENF7G-HDReady][AMD Athlon64 X2 2,5GHz@1,35V][Corsair XMS2 2x 1GB@800MHz][WD Raptor 150GB][Samsung T166 500GB]

You do have qt installed, simply because kde is using it... |

ok, running fluxbox with qt apps works fine, mem is stable. so it seems like a kde issue? _________________ Using Gentoo since 2002. |

I can get runaway memory usage in xorg-server 1.2.0 with a simple program that just connects and disconnects from the server as quickly as possible. With an X server built from git master, it's fine.
| Code: | #include <stdio.h>
#include <X11/Xlib.h>
int main(int argc, char *argv[])
{
Display *dpy;
int i = 0;
while(1) {
dpy = XOpenDisplay(NULL);
if(!dpy) {
fprintf(stderr, "Failed to open display\n");
return 1;
}
XCloseDisplay(dpy);
i++;
printf("%3i\r", i);
fflush(stdout);
}
return 0;
}
|
Compile with gcc -g -o connectloop connectloop.c -lX11 |

edit:
@AaronP: is it possible for you to update the bug with the test case at https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10009 |

Definitely not a KDE issue (if only it were that simple). How long have you left it running? As I posted above, I have the same problem running dwm for long periods of time. Right now, all indications seem to be a bug in xorg-server-1.2.0, although I'm unfortunately away from my linux box and unable to test myself. |

With xorg-server-1.2.99.901 plenty of apps running and a few hours of idle time.

This is patched ebuild for xorg-server-1.2.0-r1 with commit 811675733e97416c990e6dc9c19271b43d96248d from freedesktop. Seems to fix the leak for me...

looking at the patch and comparing the current file with 1.1.1-r4 version, it looks like someone messed up a very simple code removal process.
anyhow, the bug is gone with the patch! |

| bug was filed upstream, and should be dealt with upstream. I don't think anybody filed a gentoo bug. Probably we should and get a 1.2.0-r2 out because upstream is going for 1.3 instead of interim patches for leaks like this one. |
