That's a red herring I'm afraid. Xconsole is not needed by XDM. You can completely remove that line from /etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0 if you like.
Can you describe the sequence of events in detail for me: you just login as normal, but when you logout you get a message that you didn't log out?

Could be a crapped out wtmp.
As root try:
echo "" > /var/log/wtmp

Not really... I log into xdm, openbox starts, but then doesn't show up in `who` if I fire up an xterm.
| Code: |
<logged in remotely to check last> root pts/1 Thu Feb 8 12:39 still logged in bunder.internal.hs.com
<opened an xterm to run stuff> chris pts/0 Thu Feb 8 12:38 - 12:39 (00:01) :0.0
<logged into openbox> chris :0 Thu Feb 8 12:37 gone - no logout
<rebooted the machine>
|
edit: see how it says 2 users, if I log out of openbox, it goes back to one. no new entries in last.
| Code: | 12:43:02 up 10 min, 2 users, load average: 0.21, 0.59, 0.42
USER TTY LOGIN@ IDLE JCPU PCPU WHAT
root pts/1 12:39 1.00s 0.07s 0.02s w

I know this really doesn't say much, but it's all I seem to have to go by.
Thanks for the continued help. _________________ goodbye fgo. it was nice knowing you. |

I don't think the issue is actually with XDM.
Since we're hijacking the thread though...
I've been 'bearing' XDM for a long time (since I purged all Gnome dependencies from my system), but just yesterday I found out how to give it a nice background and add poweroff/reboot buttons.
I contributed to the Gentoo Wiki at http://gentoo-wiki.com/TIP_XDM_Login_Screen_Customization
It's a bit of work, but you end up with a nice screen. Can post a screenshot if you like.
