I can't get X to work nicely (l gives me a b and I'm not done with the emerge - should only take maybe a week for all of Gnome), so I wanted to use the framebuffer and links. Links is a very nice, fast lightweight frame/tables/javascript text browser that will output to the linux framebuffer for graphics when you use "-g".

However, the colors on screen change, but the browser never seems to come up when I use "-g". GPM is installed and working, and it tries to open the framebuffer, but it doesn't seem to work right.

I'm using a CG6 SBUS card (limited to 256 color) - the Penguin on boot looks fine, but links fails. Haven't tested other framebuffer software (yet).

Any help, comments, or just "oh yeah, I get that too" appreciated!

I'll have my sparc20 set up and have a head on it by the end of the week I hope, and I'll work on getting the framebuffer/links/whatever all working..or seeing where the problem with it is. It has a CG6 in it already, so I'll be ready to go soon as my keyboard shows up.

Yeah, I got that, too.

I use the cg14 now though.
The CG6 also got its colours mixed up under Solaris heaps
too, and was quite awkward to reset.

As for your keyboard prob - it will be your XKBRules or
XKBLayout in /etc/X11/XF86Config, maybe.
When I installed gentoo-1.1a sparc I had to change
the keymap to 'sun' before booting the new sys, but I
note this is fixed in 1.4

Hi Guys,

I'm experiencing the same on an Ultra 5 using links with the ATI framebuffer or X.

I'll let everyone know if I make any progress, but any progress goes slowly ... at what 140Mhz? :)

I have a SS20 with a CG6.

I put on Blackbox as the WM.

It "kinda" works. Its method of "graying out" the non-focused windows leave alot to be desired (not working right?). Seems that basic rendering of the HTML does not quite work right either -- no background colors around the various onscreen text and graphics. The top menu bar and side scroll bar also seem to have some display problems.

Is it Links, Blackbox, or the X install? Don't know.

The Blackbox WM otherwise seems to behave itself and works well.

I have an SS20/CG6, and the colors seem to be OK. It matters what
your Screen section looks like, and here's mine:

Code:

Section "Screen"
  Identifier   "Screen0"
  Device       "Card0"
  Monitor      "Monitor0"
  DefaultDepth 8
  SubSection   "Display"
        Depth     1
  EndSubSection
  SubSection   "Display"
        Depth     4
  EndSubSection
  SubSection   "Display"
        Depth     8
        # Visual  "TrueColor"
        Visual  "PseudoColor"
  EndSubSection
  SubSection   "Display"
        Depth     15
  EndSubSection
  SubSection   "Display"
        Depth     16
  EndSubSection
  SubSection   "Display"
        Depth     24
#       Modes     "800x600" 640x480" "1280x1024"
  EndSubSection
  SubSection   "Display"
        Depth     32
  EndSubSection
EndSection

Note that "depth 8" is the only thing that works for CG6, and for me, at
least, anything other than PseudoColor is unappealing, to say the least.
(I use fvwm2 as window mamager.)

More data.

Getting frustrated with LINKS as my browser.

Tried the Amaya browser and it behaves itself much, much better on the SPARC. Only drawback is that it doesn't do frames -- due to a philisophical difference with the current implementation in the authoring organization I believe. Not nearly as lean since it also needs the OpenMotif lib.

But it works as an HTML editor as well. Cool.

And seems fast enough even on a SM50 CPU. Found out I need to upgrade my PROM before the new pair of SM71's can be installed... dratz.

So.... you may want to try a different browser.
