i know this is a bit anal...but why are so many usernames installed by default in gentoo? And why do they have a valid shell by default (they're all set to /bin/bash)?
I dunno...i just believe that usernames should be added only when absolutely necessary and removed when they're no longer used. |

Agreed. I was a bit apoplectic about this the first time I noticed it, especially since they have valid shells. One saving grace is that most of those accounts do not have corresponding entries in the /etc/shadow file, so they shouldn't be able to log in. Still, I'm not sure I understand the reason for having them there in the first place...
Might file a bug on it -- either as a feature request or a plain old bug.

i understand that they do not have a password set...but still, i just think that there's no point in having usernames in there that aren't being used.
And fyi, qmail for example doesn't even need the account to have a valid shell. Might as well set that to /bin/nologin just in case someone out there decides to run a passwd qmaill or something like that... |
