I have xawtv working but kwintv crashes...can anyone help with this error :
/dev/video0 [v4l2]: v4l2 support seems to be missing. Using v4l instead.

Cannot really help. Assuming /dev/video is there, you can try and patch the kernel for v4l2. I'd also give Zapping a shot, it is my viewer of choice. You can emerge it or download the latest from zapping.sf.net
