Hi Guys, I just got a with a Xeon 5110 processor that supports EM64T. Do I use the x86 installer or the amd64 installer to get a 64bit version of Gentoo installed?

Hi there!

According to here: http://gentoo-wiki.com/Safe_Cflags#Xeon_w.2FEM64T_.28Intel.29_.28also_Pentium_4_P6xx.29

You can(should) use the amd64 installer.

However, I do not recommend the automatic installer. Manual install is always the best to build your Gentoo 8)

I tried to boot off the amd64 livecd but I got a kernel panic.

I am running a 5110 series CPU that supports EM64T but no luck with booting amd64.

Can I install i686 and change the make.conf to allow for x86_64?

No, you need to start by booting a 64bit kernel if you want to do a 64bit installation.

EDIT : You are not limited to using a Gentoo CD, though. If you can get a 64bit Ubuntu CD or some other distro's 64bit LiveCD to boot on your hardware, then you can install Gentoo from there.
