|
|
Well I came to Gentoo a few years ago after going through RPM-hell with Mandrake (they had just released a new version and a couple weeks later new GNOME came out)
over the years gone through the odd breakage, be it binutils and such...
the problem is, Gentoo just works and there is no fun in that, So I am leaving for Windows Vista
so long suckers! _________________

At least it was short. I'd consider switching to Vista if they: a) allowed me to use my licensed copy as I saw fit (up to 3 systems/VMs) b) didn't require jumping through hoops c) lowered the cost immensely (say, $99 for home use of the "Pro" version -- I'll even be generous and throw in $25 extra each for the 2nd and 3rd license). _________________ Quis separabit? This is obviously a spoof post. Getting Gentoo to work is like running a marathon. With no legs |

Things are easy? You're not trying hard enough. Get a motherboard which includes a jmicron chipset, and you'll know what pain is |

That's just buying an easy(?) way out, try Code: | ln -s /usr/portage/profiles/package.mask /etc/portage/package.unmask | , Code: | echo 'ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="-*"' >>/etc/make.conf | and report back, if you can...... |

I completely agree.
When i use gentoo stable it is just too damn boring. There is nothing to fix and break. I mean sometimes i even ACCEPT_KEYWORDS emerge <foo> just to break it a little so i have to fix it, that is why i went to Ubuntu stable.
What i did then was decided to have a Gentoo box that was fun! All testing, masking and mad CFLAGS, just to put the fun back into it and now i'm a happy chappy _________________ https://otw20.com/ OTW20 The new place for off the wall chat |

CAUSE WHEN THE LIGHTS ARE GONE THERE'S NO MORE TO SAY!
Vista doesn't look too bad, actually. Needs less RAM hog though.
...
I just defended a Microsoft product.
Oh lawd. What have I gotten myself into.
Do, do I hear a stampede in the distance? |

Do, do I hear a stampede in the distance? | You know, when I first installed Vista I about choked. 892 megs RAM used at boot? Gack. Then I thought "Well, I do still have 1.2 gigs left after that, I'm okay as long as I don't use Firefox. Plus I read something that said Superfetch would preload stuff for me, maybe that's what the RAM is used for."
And indeed, everything seemed to work fine. And indeed, my often-used programs *did* open surprisingly quickly. Firefox even got going in about half a second.
But then I went back to XP because either Vista or Linux hosed my MBR and NTFS partition, and I didn't have the patience to figure out which. And the shutdown menu in Vista was extremely annoying. |

First, I got a good laugh out of this thread so thanks for that.
I've been using Vista since it RTM'd and I honestly find it kind of annoying, from the start menu (including the shutdown menu) to the new "Aero" interface. For all they preached about and hyped Aero, I was pretty disappointed after having used beryl for a few weeks and OS X for about a year beforehand.
To top it off, it doesn't even run my games as fast as XP can (at least not with Vista drivers and software in their present state). Since that's pretty much the only reason I have Windows installed, my next Windows install will most likely be XP. |

Vista? hm.. the thing that ensures that i will never install windows again.
All DRM and WGA crap makes people move to GNU/Linux, you one the other hand seem to go the opposite direction.
Make sure you buy an expensive proprietary firewall, so you have protection from all the black hats waiting to exploit you. |

Dude, it just runs and there is no fun in that....did you fall and hit your head recently. Oh, and since you got the money to invest in Vista, how about donating to the gtbrad food and beer fund, it is worth cause I can assure you.
Anyway, on serious note, there is a tool for every job, so good luck. |

Sure, "it just works", so long as you've never done an update world in the past year, or you just run a server with no X. |

That's what Gentoo is for. To put the "Fun" back in updating. |
