How often are packages updated?

Just out of curiosity, how often to the Gentoo people update the packages...i.e. how long after the release of a new version of a program does it show up? For example, there is a new version of kopete available as of yesterday (Sunday June 16) but the old version is still in the package list.

It varies with each package maintainer, but some larger things (KDE, Gnome, etc.) are often packaged before the official release date. Gentoo tends to be rather cutting edge in that regard, but be careful, otherwise you might get cut.

I've found that the ebuilds are updated very quickly. Anything that i've heard about as being "new" I've found an ebuild for.

On avergae packages are more up to date then any other distro I'm aware of, this is part of the reason I use Gentoo.

For the couple packages I maintain, I could have new versions posted to the bug database less than 10 minutes after I knew about a new release.
