|
|
Hello!
I have a HP DL140G3 with one Xeon 5110 1.6GHZ.
I can boot 32bit Gentoo without problem but not 64bit. It kernel panics as soon as the kernel boot.
I have also tested Suse and got the same problem.
Should 64bit Linux work on Xeon 5110? |

Depends on, wheter this processor has EMT64 (=64 Bit capability). |

Since it's not Itanium or AMD it's must me EMT64. Right? |

Just use/boot a 32 Bit linux version.
Then enter on console:
and see if your processor supports EMT64. |

jonasb,
At 1.6GHz, I suspect your Xeon is an early P4 with extra cache, so its 32 bit only.
From memory, P3s didn't go that fast, or it could be a late P3 too. _________________ Regards,

So EMT64 should be listed in "flag"? How can I see if the CPU supports virtualization or not?

This processor is 32bit only. |

No, the Xeons he has are recent CPUs (low end of the current Woodcrest Xeon line), and they should have EM64T (confirmed by the 'lm' in his CPU info). The old Xeons you are thinking of are Xeons MP on socket 603 or 604 (probably 603 at this frequency) for 4-way machines. Those have large caches (either bigger L2 or additionnal L3) to help reduce the bus contention caused by having 4 CPUs on a shared FSB (more modern 4-way systems have split FSBs with 2 CPUs on each to reduce that effect, but they still have large L3 caches).

P3s stopped at 1.4 GHz for Tualatin core. P3 Xeons (on slot 2) maxed out even lower AFAIK.

Any error messages just before the crash ? |

I have a dell woodcrest system we use for a gentoo server that had some issues booting a 64bit gentoo cd. Try using a sabayon dvd. it worked for us... The kernel config is newer and gentoo based. Your server is definitely 64bit capable... You just need to find a livecd that works and a 64bit sabayon linux dvd will do nicely then continue with the console based install. Using Sabayon on a mission critical server would be silly.
