I did "tar -cvvzf folder.tar.gz folder" on my linux computer to a folder with one file inside. When I downloaded it from my ftp server to a windows computer it used Aladdin Extractor to untar the folder, but the folder just appeared as a file with no extension and I couldn't get it to open. I even tried adding the .avi extension of the one file inside the folder, but the avi wouldn't play. Does anyone know of a way to ge around this?
thanks,

I haven't used Windows in a long time and don't have much experience with Alladin but I do remember issues in WinZip with .tar.gz files. Try changing the extension to .tar and open it again. Also, make sure the file you downloaded was called folder.tar.gz and not folder_tar.gz |

I figured it out. I needed to rename the file folder.tar and then extract that. WinZip recognizes this, but the Aladdin Expander does not. Stupid Windows!
thanks,
