On the same computer (and phones with mic) that I have used Skype on Windows - there is now Gentoo.
Any version of Skype for Linux available in portage (tried masked ones too) in combination with ALSA ends up in lot's of ECHO comming from my side. Even when I try the Echo123 test call - and when it plays the message back to me - there is echo - so loud that I cant make sense of anything. Same when calling real person.
With OSS emulation - mic doesnt work at all
I also tried the emulation route with Wine - with OSS turned on in winecfg I again can't get anything out of microphone. And with ALSA it SOUNDS GREAT - but crashes randomly
The sound card is Mestro 2E - and of course I made sure that everything is set right in the (alsa)mixer. By that I mean that Mic is turned off in playback devices.
'aoss skype' - also echo ... |

Obviously you have to loud volume...
Try to lower your mic volume, or remove the mic boost feature... _________________ - Fredric

I had the same problem myself. It turned out to be one of the audio Capture controls. You will have to experiment with your settings for a while.
Use this to test:
Code: | arecord - | aplay - |
.. and play some music in the background. You *will* probably hear it echo.
The problem is that audio capture is capturing everything - including your front PCM. You'll have to figure out how to make it ignore it, or at least minimize the trouble.
Sorry I can't say anything more definite. I fixed it purely by accident and haven't touched it since. _________________ - grey wolf
