Cant seem to config new kernel, ok to leave config?[solved]

Kernel not recognizing your hardware? Problems with power management or PCMCIA? What hardware is compatible with Gentoo? See here. (Only for kernels supported by Gentoo.)

I have been using gentoo for 4 years and I cant seem to compile a kernel manualy.
It seems I never have the right things picked? Is there some databse or program that can cross refernce between lspci and what the kernel needs?
I used the installer on this laptop and It sorta works but it did not have a kernel config file when it was done installing.
And wireless was not working, so I decided to read up and try to make a new kernel.
After 2 attempts and many headaches I guess the manual kernel compile is not for me, so if this third attempt fails is there any harm in leaving the unsuccessful menu config file?

You can use the kernel from the livecd, or get the config from that kernel (zcat /proc/config.gz > config) and use hotplug/coldplug to let the system figure out which modules need to be loaded.
