Hi, all.
Hope the formatting comes out ok, i'm using Links.
I like Debian based distros, and have had an up-hill struggle with Gentoo. Out of interest, does anybody know which GNU/ Linux distro has the biggest Sparc64 following.
I'm going to try to succesfully install Gentoo...again.
Thanks,
Chris. |

Well, Gentoo and Debian seem to be the major ones, Slackware has an unofficial port called Splack.
You could also try any of the BSDs, they all have sparc64 ports, IIRC.
Or you could just use Solaris. _________________ I'm ready to rock out with my Glock out! |

Hi,
Solaris lacks stuff, and is not GPL'd. I know the mentioned ports exist, but wondered which one has the most users/ largest community support.
With regard to Ubuntu, I did think it was great, but on Sparc, i've found it very iffy!
Thanks,
Chris. |

This may seem weird coming from a Gentoo user but I found Solaris 10 quite difficult. The documentation right on Sun's website as well as other documentation on the web didn't help me hardly at all. I found the operating system very unintuitive and difficult. It is fast.. albeit not as fast as my gentoo machine, but still quite snappy. Has anybody else here had the same experiences? All in all once I get an UltraSPARC machine, Gentoo is going on it _________________ Dual Core - Pentium D 805 - 2 x 2.66Ghz

I definetly find Slowaris to be a pita. It just seems like they do so many things bass ackwards. Ive got a number of sparc machines in my lab here at work and more and more of them are running gentoo these days. And I do agree with you. I find the SUN documentation to be very lacking.
The only boxes that I have left that are running slowaris are ones that are required to have due to vendor software that runs on it needs it as a requirement.
I have gentoo running on a number of sparc based machines. Ultra 5's and 10's. Ultra 60, a crapton of Netra T105's and T200's. And the grand daddy of them all is an E6500 which is totally maxed out on everything. I would love to get Gentoo on some of the 440's i have, but none so far.
