I just downgraded my kernel to gentoo-sources-2.6.15, and my sound no longer works. I have it built into the kernel identical to the alsa guide. alsaconf identified and loaded modules for my card, but i get errors when running the alsasound script.

Quote:
localhost ehren # /etc/init.d/alsasound restart
* WARNING: you are stopping a boot service.
* Storing ALSA Mixer Levels ...
/usr/sbin/alsactl: get_control:209: Cannot read control info '2,0,0,Front Playback Volume,0': Invalid argument [ !! ]
* Unloading ALSA ... [ ok ]
* Unloading ALSA modules ... [ !! ]

When I play a file in xmms, it will play with no sound; alsamixer crashes when I try to run it with the following error:
Quote:
alsamixer: function snd_mixer_load failed: Invalid argument

One last piece of information;
Quote:
alsactl names
returns nothing. Following is the relevant output of lspci:
Quote:
00:10.1 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP51 High Definition Audio (rev a2)

I truly appreciate any help. Would prefer to keep the kernel module and stay away from alsa-driver as there seem to be problems with it and this version of the kernel.
Thanks,
- Ehren

Hmmm .... I have never gone this long without a respose, I could be in trouble. I finally gave up, took alsa out of my kernel and tried the alsa-driver package. Everything loaded and the 'poof' came out of the speaker, but when I tried to play a file in xmms, only the first second of the song would play and continually repeat. I figured a restart would work, but when it attempted to run the alsasound init script in the boot runlevel, the computer crashed. I used the liveCD to take alsasound out of the boot runlevel, got into my environment, ran alsasound and it worked, but this time the music in alsasound played extremely slow and with extremely poor quality. It sounded raspy. Another thing to note, I could not adjust the sound level with the gnome slider. I unloaded alsasound, re-emerged all the goody alsa packages and then when I ran alsasound, again, computer froze on 'loading sound card 0' ...

I seem to be in a jam, again; the sound worked perfectly with alsa in the kernel (gentoo-sources 2.6.17 + 2.6.18 ), but 2.6.15 is a mess. If anyone can help me out, that would be great.

Thanks.

I stand taking a hit; I went to a Fedora forum I found through a google search for my motherboard. The answer lie in editing my /etc/modules.d/alsa file with the following fix:
Quote:
options snd-card-0 index=0
options snd-card-0 model=6stack-digout

Everything works great with the built in kernel modules. This is with gcc 4.1 and gentoo-sources 2.16.15-r8 for amd 64. My motherboard is a msi K8ngm2-ndp.

It appears that I have the same chipset and arch as you, except I seem to be in a slightly worse situation...
(https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-515618.html)
Also having no luck getting anyone to respond to my pleas for help :D

I think I've broken things badly, just wish I knew what...

I would be really greatful if I could get some information from you.
Namely:

1. Is "Sound support" compiled built-in or as a module.
2. It would be cool if I could see your entire /etc/modules.d/asla file
3. Do you have USE="alsa oss" in your make.conf?

Also, any other information you think might help...

Thanks
