|
|
I'm installing from a Knoppix CD because my system refuses to boot the 2006.1 LiveCD that I used to install on my desktop. It keeps loading up the kernel and re-starting.~ Anywho, I'm using Knoppix 5.0.1 and following the Alt Install directions for a Knoppix cd. After I mount -o bind /proc /mnt/gentoo/proc, and I try to run chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash, I get the following error:
Code: | Illegal instruction |
Anyone else ever have this problem? Fixes? Thanks in advance! |

Which stage tarball are you using, and what is your processor? _________________ "Mr Thomas Edison has been up on the two previous nights discovering 'a bug' in his phonograph." --Pall Mall Gazette (1889)

It's an AMD K6-2 @350MHz. I'm installing from a stage3 tarball. Anything else just let me know... The "Bawls" I drank to allow me to complete this install is keeping me from actually sleeping, lol. |

iirc an AMD K6 is an i586 CPU. If I'm wrong, ignore the rest
The LiveCD needs an i686 CPU to boot. Use either the minimal x86 CD (no GUI) or use the knoppix cd you already have.
The illegal instruction error you get when chrooting simply means your CPU cannot run the binaries from the stage3 you untarred.
You need either the x86 2006.1 stage3, you would then have to change your CHOST, or the i586 2006.0 stage3 in which case you should then upgrade most packages.

I'm installing remotely using the Knoppix cd with an old 2005.0 stage3 tarball and the latest portage snapshot. We'll find out if it works when I get home, but so far I just chroot'ed and am in the middle of an 'emerge --sync'. Thank you both for your help. |
