|

Hi,
I tried with different distributions like Redhat 9, Slackware 9 and now Gentoo, and each time I play this game it is slow. For example, when I go to the main menu and to select my civilization it takes about 3-4 sec to active it!! I have winex 2.1 (i bought it). I'm aware if I buy the new version (winex 3.0) if the speed will be faster?
I have warcraft III too and the game is fast just like in windows....

I tried Civ III on Wine a year ago with the same results. You are not alone but, I don't know if there is a solution. _________________ The true guru is a teacher.

Here's a solution:
Well, it's not a solution, but it's an alternative. It's dead easy to play too:
Code: | # civclient &
(opens up the client in the background)
# civserver
> set aifill 7
(go to the client and hit 'connect')
> start |
And enjoy FreeCiv. It's a damn good clone of Civ2. _________________ Want Free games?

I imagine warcraft 3 runs fast because it uses OpenGL. Civ3 on the other hand doesn't take advantage of that, so it is slowed down by all the wine replication of windows libraries. I'm guessing turn generation is very slow
Anyway, these are all guesses, but it doesn't surprise me that WC3 is fast and Civ3 is slow. |

It works FAIR under winex3_pre1; there is a speed increase, but I still can't get multiplayer to work. The game, along with most others, crashes when I click on tcp/ip. I'm not sure if it's just my setup or not... |

I love Freeciv, but after seeing Civ3 it looks pretty basic. Anyone know of there are any plans to produce a nice clone of Civ3, or just to update the graphics of Freeciv? |

I feel that freeciv needs a graphics improvement. Unfortunate about that - there's a few games with poor graphics that I really enjoy, but freeciv isn't one of them.
Still, I think it's great that we have it. And there are some graphics enhancements in process, such as an SDL client:

And I think it's looking pretty good. |

Ooh, those shots do look cool As handy as it is having Freeciv as a Gtk app so it's another desktop app, it never quite looks like a proper game like that. Bring on SDL |
