Login problems (very strange!)

I installed Gentoo some weeks ago, and everything worked fine, without any problem. I configured an adsl-connection, installed fluxbox, etc.
Today I turned on my Gentoo laptop, and after a bit, the classic login prompt appeared (i don't have any graphical login like xdm or kdm):

Login:

I typed my username, but nothing appeared on the screen. I pressed Enter, nothing.
I didn't install a new login program or something like that.
Why?

you recently changed kernel or anything?

basically what your saying is your keyboard doesn't work?

No ... yesterday I didn't install any new program at all, and i didn't run emerge --sync or similar.

i don't think so because in Grub i can use keyboard commands. I think it's a login problem, but i don't know why it appeared only now and what it depends...

it just sounds to me that the kernel hasnt detected your keyboard, hence why it works in grub and not when the system is up...

if you havent done ANYTHING at all, I have no idea...

Something similar happened to me. The solution was to install the package pam-login

emerge sys-apps/pam-login

After that, I could login without any problems...

Today, I tried starting again this Gentoo. I could login without problems, I write startx on the command line, but I couldn't finish the word, because the keyboard stopped working after the first two letters.
I rebooted with Gentoo Live Installer, to emerge pam-login as you suggested, but when I pressed the first key, a lot of kernel messages appeared to me.

Detected soft lockup on CPU#0!
Modules linked in: <a list of modules about parallel port, usb devices, etc.>

and other hardware errors.
I tried with Hakin9 Live (the last version, with a 2.6.14 kernel): the startup completed successfully, I opened xterm, just to figure out what is happening to my laptop, and to save some file. I typed without problems some random commands (such as ifconfig or cd), but after a bit the system freezed completely: I couldn't move my touchpad or use the keyboard.
Together with this, my connection on the laptop (via a cross cable connected to the adsl modem) stopped working without any reason. The LAN led, indicating that the connection through the cable is working, is turned off.

I'm a bit desperate. Can anyone help me?
Just one question: if I try reinstall everything, I can resolve, or this is an hardware problem?

sounds like you have a hardware problem, i seriously dont think a reinstall would solve it because you said it froze using a livecd...

Obviously I cant tell what is wrong from what youve said, but it could be the laptops mainboard or cpu ?

I tried with Knoppix ...no problems at all! I've used xterm for a long without freezing or similar things, and everything worked fine ... for me, it's a stupid conflict between some init scripts. Could be?

mainly because it was complaining about hardware.. was everything you was running stable?

anyone else have any ideas on this?

test your ram chips with memtest86+
