OSD 'merges' with video - mplayer

I don't recall having this problem in the past, but since I updated world recently the on screen display information sort of blends with the underlying video, and smears out across parts of the screen. Try watching a movie with subtitles and you'll go bananas. Better than LSD almost...
Anyone who knows what causes this and how to repair this?
