| I am using gaim but I would love to have something that allows me to transfer files using an msn plugin. Is there anything else out there that has the ability to use a broad range of im client types that can do file transfers? |

sorry... although there are alot of alternatives to gaim, I don't think there are too many I would use if you want compatibility with msn features. _________________ -------------------------------------------------------

| I've heard it's possible to run Trillian in Wine. Might look into that... |

'psi' is the nicest one I've seen yet. I'm not sure if it lets you transfer files on MSN but you might want to check it out:
emerge psi |

| I am merging psi now. I don't HAVE to have a file transfer capability through an msn "plugin" its just that alot of my friends use msn. Any type of file transfer through an IM would be nice. |

|
|
Hi I searched through the forums, but I wasn't able to find any good messages on this subject.
I was wondering if there is an IM (instant messenger) client in portage that works as well as Trillian on Windows? It has to support all the different protocols out there: ICQ, AIM, YIM, MSN, etc. Is there anything like this out there? Which is the best? What do you recommend?
Thanks for your help. _________________ We Specialize in providing dedicated VM web servers with Gentoo 1.4 for Linux developers.

why not just use trillian !?
emerge wine
emerge winesetuptk
then run winesetuptk
then install the windows version of trillian using wine:
wine /path/to/trillian_install.exe
then run it
wine ~/.wine/fake_windows/Program Files/trillian/trillian.exe
can't beat that I reakon |

If you like trillian so much, you can as well install
crossover plugin As a bonus you'll get Quicktime Player, Windows Media Player and alot more.
I use gaim.

Actually, since he's asking for people's opinions, rather than support, it's a Gentoo Chat thread. Off to GC we go.
Regarding searching the forums, you must have missed this thread, this thread, this thread, this thread, this thread and this thread

Well, I searched the term "instant messenger" and got nothing and then searched on "im" and got many unrelated terms. I did not know the names of the IM clients in portage so I couldn't search by specific names. I should have searched by trillian though. I didn't think of that. Oh well, Thanks everybody for your kind responses.
Sincerely,

Don't worry about missing the search. The search engine for these forums isn't the best because it requires you to put things like "instant and messaging" instead of what we are used to using with google and yahoo, "instant messaging". See this thread for more on searching.
As for the IM client, I recommend gaim. _________________ if i never try anything, i never learn anything..

As a windoze client Trillian is nice, however I'd personally rather run a native client then something in WINE. I want to send an army of linux zealots over to the trillians forums to convince them to start porting the thing... _________________ "And I'm right. I use dMSN, a java based messaging client, written by some Dutch guy, named 'Danny'.

| I used to use Trillian under crossover, but I didn't really like it. I now use Gaim for AIM, Y!, MSN, and ICQ, and it supports others as well. (If you are up for an adventure a fork of Gaim called Gaim-vv supports audio and video for Y! and AIM. It's not in portage though, and getting it and its dependencies built is a bit of a pain.) |
