That sounds cool but I'd like that part internal. |
You can get ide-to-cf adapters.

They have a limited write life, which could be a problem. |
True, but you shouldn't have to write to it much unless you need to upgrade something. As long as you aren't using it for swap I would think it would be alright. You also wouldn't need one that large if it was just to hold a small install + mythtv.
Anyway just an idea, a laptop hd wouldn't be bad either as they are usually fairly quiet. Depending on the case you might be able to suspend hd or other tricks to make it a bit quieter.

Very true.
Perhaps something smaller, a gumstick computer with linux embeded on a rom chip? _________________ [Owner/Operator: Dhampir Dreams]

here's my mythtv box:
athlon xp 3000+
512mb pc2700
hauppauge pvr-250
hauppauge pvr-150
nvidia mx 4000
DVD RW drive
300GB Hard Drive
200GB Hard drive (400 GB total storage for mythtv, rest is the system and file storage)
runs great. I run an irc proxy on there, mail system, file storage (samba and nfs), torrent flux, test apache stuff on it, etc etc etc
has no issues, runs beautifully. _________________ < bmg505> I think the first line in reiserfsck is

Sounds good. Personally I'd like to be able to share what mythTV does across a small network, hence why I"m thinking frontend backend setup. _________________ [Owner/Operator: Dhampir Dreams]

i'm setting up a pvr for my parents right now... so far it's a via c3-2@1ghz on one of those via motherboards, with a twinhan dvb-s card (only one i could find with a CI), 256mb ram, 160gb hd and a pcmcia wlan adapter (the board has one pci slot and one pcmcia type1 and another type2 slot, pretty handy) and a nice, shiny black mini-itx case. it's actually smaller than our dvd/vcr combination, so that's pretty cool.
setup's going fine so far, i'm going for vdr this time (mythtv's cool, but vdr seems to have some important features that my parents require) _________________ "Confident, lazy, cocky, dead." -- Felix Jongleur, Otherland

SOunds great. If you could post what you did to get it working and the parts I'm more the happy to look them over. I'm very skeptical about what to do for hardware. _________________ [Owner/Operator: Dhampir Dreams]

sure thing, i'll keep ye updated
i'm still very sceptical as to the dvb-s card. normally i use "technisat skystar2"-cards (they're using a "Techsan Electronics Co Ltd B2C2 FlexCopII DVB chip", one of the few that is not only well supported under linux, but it's an excellent chip too, with good signal rating and isolation), but i can't this time because my parents want to watch paytv, which requires a CI/CAM interface on the card :/
the installation itself went smoothly so far (linux hardware support for the via epia-m boards is pretty neat) like with any regular computer & gentoo installation, i'll look into vdr sometime soon (it's installed but a tad... counter-intuitive). _________________ "Confident, lazy, cocky, dead." -- Felix Jongleur, Otherland
