I need the JDK 1.5 on my imac G3 but i'm new too gentoo so i figuered that emerge masks sun-jdk-1.5* because of my arch.
Is there a way to go around this? I don't care if it's not stable or tested yet. |

echo "=dev-java/ibm-jdk-bin-1.5.0" >> /etc/portage/package.unmask
And follow the instructions.

actualy wanted to use the sun version (unless it can't be done or is slower), but tried that for the one of sun and still says (masked by: -* keyword) so probably its the arch
for the sun or ibm dist: wich is faster? need to run an Java bassed server on an imac G3 333mhz (rev B) so it will be tricky if its fast anough but it runs on a celeron 900mhz in WinXP so im hoping that it wil be lot faster if ran on linux |

| Install jdk 1.4.2 as well as 1.5. Use jdk 1.4.2 as system vm, as many packages don't work/compile properly with 1.5. Use jdk 1.5 for individual applications, ie firefox java plugin. |

| actually I read sun has released 1.5 for ppc, but apparently it's only for "embedded systems" (whatever that means) |

Now that Sun is going to opensource a big part of Java and loosens the license, is there hope for a modern sun-jdk on PPC?
Some packages explicitly require a Sun-jdk to work, for example XMLmind XML Editor ("xxe" in portage). _________________ There are two states of gentoo boxes: compiling and turned off... |
