kdeenv blocks kdelibs

resolved the conflict by going back to stable kde-apps - mixing the branches seems indeed to have caused all the trouble.
some apps though arn't stable yet. i check which dependencies the pull in...

I put AllenJB's package list to my /etc/portage/package.keywords/ and everything seems to be fine now. Thanks a lot for this great support!

emerge world -pvuD doesn't show me errors any more, so i hope i can finish my gcc-upgrade this WE.

I had this same problem. I found using -t that even though they were set in the keyword file that both kde-base/kdesu and kde-base/kcminit were not being upgraded and were pulling in the kde-env for old kdelibs. Once I masked the old versions it properly pulled in the updates and resolved the problem.

If you still having the problem I'd recommend trying the tree view of emerge and see what is trying to pull in the kde-env.

Well, I seem to have similar problems when I try to update my system. Something pulls in kde-env which is currently not installed and which is blocked (for good reasons, I guess!) by kdelibs-3.5.4-r2 and vice versa. Portage even wants to downgrade qt from 3.3.6-r2 to 3.3.4-r8. All packages are from ~x86 so I did not mix stable and unstable branches.

Unfortunately, I cannot determine which package wants to pull in kde-env. Perhaps someone could help me here.

I had a similar problem with kde-env being pulled in as a dependency of some package on my system. I discovered that this was various packages from KDE 3.4. You can prune them out by reading this.

Thank you for your quick response. Indeed, I had some old relicts of kde-3.4 packages which I wiped out following your suggestion.

But sadly, that did not change my initial problem. Portage still wanted to install kde-env. Wondering about a good method how to determine the dependency which pulls kde-env I simply put it into package.mask which turned up to be a good idea. Afterwards, emerge told me this:

It seems the problem is that kdelibs-3.5.2-r6 depends on kde-env, but kdelibs-3.5.4-r2 blocks it. kdesu is the package that requires 3.5.2, hence bringing in the block. Double check that the ~arch version of kdesu will be installed.

I had to emerge kdesu and kcminit separately!

A big "THANKS" to the devs.
It's really annoying to have a borked system every few weeks because the devs are updating a package which dependencies haven't been checked correctly.
Because one package (kdelibs) was updated I have to put hundrets of packages into my package.keywords file.
I can't go forward and can't go backward and in this state my system is completely unusable in terms of graphical tools.

I've tried several distributions but had never such problems like with gentoo because the devs of other distributions are aware of their responsibility.

It's really, really, really (do I have to say it once more?), REALLY annoying and I'm going to switch to another distribution which doesn't fuck up my system every few weeks.

And just for the record: My system was rocking stable before this last update and I didn't have any unstable kde-packages installed.
I tried every hint in this and other threads and it still doesn't work.

I'm really pissed off!
