How about something that would take advantage of distcc with my X2 Windsor 3800 @ 2.4GHz?

Machine specs are below, all stock except FSB, which I just got up to 400 because of the new MoBo (nForce4 FTW).

First one sounds BSish, probably the time from the stage building? Built this Gentoo install from 2006.1.

First merge. It took 4 minutes on my 3700+ at stock speeds. (and no, I don't have the other times handy)

There's a reason you're supposed to recompile system and world..

strange....... I should be kicking ass with this setup. oh well.

edit: oh wait, I know why. I got a crazy idea to have gjc in my use flags. let me remove it, i dont need it.

Code:

AMD Athlon 64 3200+ (754 pin), 2000 Mhz. 2G of RAM. The first compile was using GCC 3.4.6-r1, the later compiles were re-emerging GCC 4.1.1 with 4.1.1. So there's definitely been a speed improvement from 3.x to 4.x.

merge time: 4 hours, 54 minutes and 55 seconds.

Emerges 1-5 were on a 4800X2 in 32bit, then moved the itty bitty 4GB drive to a 433MHz Celeron. The first 3 emerges were with -march=c3-2 -Os and -j3 for an epia that I have. The next two were -march=pentium2 -O2 and -j3 for this box. The last was done on this box, the 433MHz Celeron, with -j2. top never showed more than 1.05 load. I thought it wasn't going to make it. At 4 hours it was down to 200MB of disk space, don't know how close it came. I intend to experiment with different methods of updating the Celeron box from builds done on the X2 box, including binary only.

The same X2 box at -march=k8 -j3, 64bit.
Code:
X2 ~ # genlop -t gcc
 * sys-devel/gcc

     Wed Aug 16 16:16:41 2006 >>> sys-devel/gcc-3.4.6-r1
merge time: 21 minutes and 31 seconds.

     Mon Aug 21 06:38:05 2006 >>> sys-devel/gcc-3.4.6-r1
merge time: 20 minutes and 12 seconds.

     Sun Sep  3 01:33:59 2006 >>> sys-devel/gcc-4.1.1
merge time: 45 minutes and 5 seconds.

     Sun Sep  3 12:10:12 2006 >>> sys-devel/gcc-4.1.1
merge time: 42 minutes and 59 seconds.

     Sun Sep  3 16:43:39 2006 >>> sys-devel/gcc-4.1.1
merge time: 54 minutes and 42 seconds.

     Sun Sep  3 21:04:31 2006 >>> sys-devel/gcc-4.1.1
merge time: 42 minutes and 38 seconds.

I think it would be interesting to know what hardware and software combinations yielded the lowest kwhrs for emerging. My mythtv box commflags at the lowest freq/volt setting. Does that mean that it's using idle cycles?

The reason why some of you getting starangely long gcc compilation times with kickass systems:
You are running amd64/multilib. It also needs to build a 32-bit tailored GCC (in addition to 64-bit one).
