Nvidia accelerated but shows no direct rendering [SOLVED]

I'm trying to have Direct Rendering 'Yes' with my nvidia and amd64, but as much as I try I cannot get it. I've read dozens of threads and still can't find an answer, so please add your comments our suggestions. Looks like nvidia driver is loading and working properly, agp too, etc...

I have: AMD64, Nvidia GeForce 6600 LE, Xorg 7.0.0. As per glxinfo I DON'T have Direct Rendering enabled, however the FPS is really high when using opengl nvidia versus using opengl xorg-x11. Is opengl related to Direct Rendering?

If I do: "eselect opengl set nvidia" then I get w/ glxgears: 3800
If I do: "eselect opengl set xorg-x11" then I get w/ glxgears: 800

In both cases glxinfo returns 'direct rendering: No'.

SOLUTION FOR THIS PROBLEM (SUMMARY): As "alistair" mentions below:

..."U also don't have direct rendering but as I understand it we won't until nvidia release new drivers that support the DRI interface changes that have occurred in xorg7/xgl".
..."But that doesn't matter as I was able to play movies as my background while rotating my screen and the top didn't show xgl/xorg using more than 10-15% processor time".

Did you restart X between changing the OpenGL implementation with eselect? I think it's using the (hardware accelerated) nvidia opengl implementation even without a restart but for some reason direct rendering still says no?

Yes, I've done restarts, xdm restart, reboots, :-) but still the same.

grufie, precisely what I want to run is XGL, and I found a problem there (look at this post ) related to GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap. While I was investigating I realized that I didn't have Direct Rendering enabled and so I have two problems now :-)

So, my question to you: do you have NVIDIA + Xorg (7) + XGL + AMD64 ?

Yep i do and its working great.

U also don't have direct rendering but as I understand it we won't until nvidia release new drivers that support the DRI interface changes that have occurred in xorg7/xgl.


But that doesn't matter as I was able to play movies as my background while rotating my screen and the top didn't show xgl/xorg using more than 10-15% processor time.

Thanks for the information. It clarifies everything. I'll mark this topic as solved.

Regarding the second problem I mention (GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap) I've made progress, by doing this, recommended in the Spanish forum:

as i know, the issues regarding the new DRI, are only with >=xorg-server-1.1.*
xorg-x11-7.1 depends on >=xorg-server-1.1.*, but it _does_ work also with xorg-server-1.0.*, which in turn works with the latest nvidia-kernel and nvidia-glx.
seems tricky, because i change the dependency in the ebuild of xorg-x11-7.1 from >=xorg-server-1.1.0 to >=xorg-server-1.0.2 every time my portage tree is synced.
so in fact i have the following packages installed:
