Installing Gentoo on Virtual PC 2004
The livecd kernel works great. I compiled gentoo-sources, and it compiled OK, but I was getting kernel panic
Quote: |
VFS: Cannot open root device "hda3" or unknown-block(3,3)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(3,3)
|
my virtual disk is partitioned like the example in the guide
/dev/hda1 512M ext2
/dev/hda2 32M linux-swap
/dev/hda3 16G ext3
ext3 support is compiled into the kernel. I went back to recompile it, and this time when the kernel starts to load, the entire pc crashes, instead of just the virtual pc.
the helpfile for virtual pc says this:
Quote: |
Code: |
COMPONENT Virtual machine emulated hardware
--------- ---------------------------------
BIOS: AMI BIOS
Chipset: Intel 440BX
Sound card: Creative Labs Sound Blaster 16 ISA Plug and Play
Network adapter: (multi-function) DEC 21140A 10/100
Video card: S3 Trio 32/64 PCI with 8 MB Video RAM
|

entire lspci output

I have two .config files: this one is complete and this one has only the enabled options.
I've been working on this for about 10 hours now (there goes my sunday). It takes about 30 minutes to compile the kernel, and 15 minutes to reboot, which causes the work to go slowly. Eventually I'll just capitulate and use the genkernal, i'm sure it will work because the livecd does. but i'm not ready to yet. so, any idea why this kernel would crash not only the virtual pc, but the entire computer as well? thanks. |

Virtual PC 2004 really sucks.
Of all the distro´s I tried on it none worked (wrong or screwed resolutions, horrendous speeds (if it worked)).
You´re much better of using VMWare (Server). |
