Also, is there a possibility of getting a tux and larry icon at the same time on a multi-proc system? :-P

So that is why I get two tux images on boot, never knew that.

I think Larry would rock on the corner of boot screen. Is there already a patch for the Gentoo G sitting there instead of Tux. I didn't see anybody bring him up?

Put Tux on the upper lefthand corner where he has always been, and put larry in the upper righthand, and maybe go a step farther and make it a whole banner, with GENTOO spelled out in 3D-looking Gentoo-style bubble letters.

but yes, ++ for the idea.

Wasn't this an option quite some time ago? I remember having LarryTheCow as a choice right along with Tux and I think 2 others (a gentoo 'g' maybe? not sure anymore ...)

Anyway, why not be part of the gentoo patchset :) Branding at it's finest!

Tux, Larry, the G, maybe a G with attitude (for the "hipity hop peoplz. Give it a cheap, nickel necklace and a 9mm), and GENTOO in the G-style bubble letters.

and yes, I'm kidding about #3 there.

EDIT: Why is the s and the d so close on my keyboard? GAH

That sounds like an awesome idea, the best tradeoff possible. :)
You may create such a picture, no matter whether it'll be integrated as a boot-logo or not - at least it'd make a *very* good job as a desktop background.

What will Gentoo be without Larry the cow? Notthing. Lets all have Larry the cow at boot.

How about put Tux in a leotard and Larry in a tutu and have Tux holding up Larry in one of those jumps they do in ballet :)

Poor tux, crushed to death by a gender confused cow...

Perhaps it would work better the other way round?

I was kind of thinking of not de-masculinating Tux. Tux is a mans man, er, I mean penguin. Larry I think fits the, ahem, sexual mindset needed to wear the frilly, pointless skirt.

Tux better be a man's man if he is going to hoist half a ton of beef into the air...

Edit: It just hit me that I'm trying to apply logic to this... Bad Yabba, bad Yabba, go to your room! No supper!

Gentoo to me is about choice.

I'd really really really like the option to have Larry the cow in the boot screen.
Maybe even have it be the default for gentoo-sources.
But I'd still like to see it be an option for those who don't want to the different image.

I don't know what would be involved but would it be possible to change the image using some option when you; make menuconfig?

There *used* to be such an option. It was dropped for some reason.

In the gentoo-sources? or in the plain vanilla kernel from kernel.org?

I think I remember seeing something but totally forget where.

In gentoo-sources. The vanilla sources wouldn't have had gentoo specific logos... there was tux, larry, and a cool looking gentoo G logo (which is what I always used).

EDIT: it was a "Powered by Gentoo" G logo. I think they stopped doing them when the standard kernel switched from 2.4 to 2.6.

Half ton? Larry needs to gain weight...

Give him some corn!

Go back and see if its in the 2.4 kernels? I would think it would be easy to adapt to the new 2.6 kernel (why did I type 2.567 there the first time?), but I still say make one of Larry, one of Tux, one of the two like I described, and one with Tux in the upper left and Larry in the upper right.

p.s. Told someone else that Larry was a sexually confused mascot. They looked at me and said "You guys are weird". I love it :)

Here is the logo that I used to have at boot up: http://www.gentoo.org/images/powered-small.png

From looking at the kernel sources, it seems that you just need an 80x80 pixel ppm file with the right color depths and palettes.

Ok, a small logo in ppm format and the rest I don't know anything about. Nice.

No, you just need an 80x80 PNG. Then you convert it to PPM like this:
Code:
pngtopnm /path/to/picture.png | pnmtoplainpnm > logo_yourpic_clut224.ppm

No need to mess about with palettes or whathaveyou manually :)

I've compiled a package of 4 80x80 PNGS that you might want to use, and also two slightly bigger images in case they work too (I'll test those soon).

It contains:
  • The original logo I posted - Larry the Cow. Pure and unadulterated.
  • The hybrid mutant Tux-Larry thing I posted more recently.
  • The Gentoo "g" logo.
  • "GENTOO" in that funny bubble-writing.
  • "GENTOO" in that funny bubble writing, except at a more legible (more than 80x80) size
  • The "Powered by Gentoo Linux" logo yabbadabbadont used to have at bootup (also oversized)

I've also submitted the bug report.

Woohoo!
