Merged above post here.
You need to run revdep-rebuild. php depends on a package that needs to be rebuild first. See the first post in this thread.

Hi I have tried to emerge glibc marked as stable several times with several compiler options (each time I have rebuild the toolchain and once the whole system and world). It aborts always with the same error and nobody seems to have an answer.
Detailed information can be found in http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-519562-highlight-.html
Regards,
Stefan

Hi!

I have a problems with compilation of bash using gcc-4.1.1.

Code:

So after the
Code:
emerge -eav system
emerge -eav world

after my gcc-4.1.1 upgrade I would expect that all binaries have been updated.

This is not the case - I have 384 binaries in /usr/bin dating back to Feb 2004 and I've not checked all the other directories for executables!

How do I determine what can safely be removed - do I just move them out of the way and try it (and hence can move them back if it all goes TU ?

Cheers

Is there a way to avoid compiling packages twice when doing the
Code:
emerge -eav system
emerge -eav world

steps? My poor computer has just spent six hours compiling the "system" step (106 packages). I noticed that in the "world" step (357 packages) a number of big packages are compiled again (like glibc, gcc, ...).

Yeah, I read the guide - they say first emerge system, and then world! Your way would have been shorter :D

Shouldn't this thread be renamed to "GCC 4.1.1 and glibc 2.5 stable on x86 and amd64"?

Please read and follow the Gentoo GCC Upgrade Guide religiously. You obviously have done neither, since if you had you'd have seen the exact error message you're getting (and its solution) at the end of the guide, namely here.

No. They all are needed.

After you'll finish, run:

so I'm still thing that there's something wrong with automake.. (however, I've emerged -e system multiple times already)

well, I tried the following
Code:

tar -jxvf /usr/portage/distfiles/gtk+-2.10.9.tar.bz2
cd gtk+-2.10.9
./configure --prefix=/usr
make
make install

and ... surprise  - it works... however, emerge still thinks that gtk 2.10.9 is not installed and keep trying to emerge it

[solved] by unmerge and emerge again of autoconf

and adding /usr/lib to LDPATH in /etc/env.d/00basic
