Those questions are dealt with here.
You can most likely just leave things as they are. The defaults should work fine. _________________ Please add [solved] to the initial post's subject line if you feel your problem is resolved. Help answer the unanswered

if you directly connect the ethernet card to your modem, you will need to set up PPPoE, searching google for "site:www.gentoo.org pppoe" yields lots of results, so just check one of those out. you'll need to emerge rp-pppoe on your system and then set it up as described in one of those documents. _________________ "Confident, lazy, cocky, dead." -- Felix Jongleur, Otherland

Most I know of are either a usb device in which case you need PPPoE or an ethernet device which simply acts as a router too. _________________ Please add [solved] to the initial post's subject line if you feel your problem is resolved. Hi folks,
Tks for your advice.
I'm now reading;
Gentoo Linux 2006.0 AMD64 Handbook
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/2006.0/handbook-amd64.xml?full=1
making preparation to install Gentoo.
I'm aware of "emerge rp-pppoe" and running "pppoe-setup". But I'm not sure whether I need to touch
/etc/conf.d/net.example. Or just skip this section.

Let's put it this way, if the installcd setup networking for you automatically, you won't need to setup rpppoe etc. The cd will have simply found your modem as a router and dhcp server and have got an ip address from it. In that case your networking should work out of the box really. If you did have to set up the pppoe stuff first, well then you already know what you need to set up. _________________ Please add [solved] to the initial post's subject line if you feel your problem is resolved. This ADSL question is really obscure. There are lots of ISP's out there. Some use PPPoE, some prefer PPPoA or PPTP. Additionally some ship their modems pre-set to bridge mode - I do not know why. Maybe they want to save on resources, user disconnects when the computer is shut down. You really need to determine what you are dealing with before you can set up your connection or get any useful help here. |

well, most adsl modems sold or bundled with isp subscriptions around here are actual modems and not routers -- isps and advertisers are very quick to point out if it's a router and not a modem. and most of them aren't usb either, but they do plug into a regular rj-45 port of your nic and require whatever they're plugged into to speak pppoe, so i was just suggesting things base on how they are around here... _________________ "Confident, lazy, cocky, dead." -- Felix Jongleur, Otherland

I see. I guess we're just a bit luckier with our local isp's here then. Every ethernet adsl modem I've seen here is a router too and not shipped in bridged mode. USB modems aren't, but new subscriptions often come with a wireless router nowadays, so usb seems to be on its way out altogether. _________________ Please add [solved] to the initial post's subject line if you feel your problem is resolved. weeeeeell okay, most subspriptions do come with "wireless routers" and usb w-lan dongles around here these days. but they do say "router" if it's a router and "modem" if it's just a modem... then again, all regional isps suck *shrugs* _________________ "Confident, lazy, cocky, dead." -- Felix Jongleur, Otherland
