Hello everyone,

I'm new to Gentoo (though, i have been using Ubuntu for about 2 years now), and i have decided to install Gentoo. I downloaded the LiveCD install, but i just burned the iso in the file, leaving the Contents, Digest and ASC files. I didn't think i needed them. Now when i try to use the LiveCD, i get stuck at: Retrieving contents /etc/..... Do i need to burn the Digest contents and ASC files. If so, could you tell me a program that would allow me to burn all of those on a CD with the image file.

truNWA,

Welcome to Gentoo.

You only burn the file *.iso file to CD, as an image not a file.

The other files are there for information and as a check on your download.
If you have burned the CD correctly, you can open it in Ubuntu (or even Windows) and you should see a few files.
If you see a single file, with a name ending in .iso, you have burned the file to the CD without using the file as a CD image.
Something like
Code:
$ ls /mnt/dvd -l
total 683918
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root      21776 Feb 22 17:46 Getting_Online.txt
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root       6222 Feb 22 17:46 README.txt
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root       2048 Feb 22 17:36 docs
-rwx------ 1 root root  700297216 Feb 22 18:03 image.squashfs
drwxr-xr-x 2 roy  users      2048 Feb 22 17:46 isolinux
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root          0 Feb 22 17:46 livecd
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root       2048 Feb  5  2006 snapshots
would be a good sign.

truNWA,

Is this before or after the boot: prompt ?

If its before, I'm not sure I understand the problem. If its after, there are all sorts of 'no' options you should try to prevent various probing for hardware you don't have from happening. The F2...screens tell you about them.

noapic is a favourite, gentoo-nofb helps in some cases too.

You can turn off the autodections/configuration altogether but thats a last resort. That should get you to a root console with almost nothing except the keyboard working.
