As far as I'm concerned, stage 1 installs aren't supported anymore because you get the same effect doing a stage 3 install? Can someone confirm or deny this?

I don't think that is the reason.

I think it's because Stage 3 + Rebuild = Stage 1. It's very easy to turn a Stage 3 install into a Stage 1 install.

I don't think I have ever bootsraped, yet I have installed gentoo a few times.
What do you get when you do
Code:
emerge -e system
?

And baigsabeeh is right. If you want a stage 1 install but bootstrap fails, do a stage 3 and rebuild.

That's just a wild guess (well, not entirely) but you shouldn't have a comma i.e. "," in your cflags and they read "-O2 -mtune=pentium4 -pipe -Wl, -O1".
Try removing this comma and we'll see what's next.

...also...
... at the moment you're using gcc-3.3.4 and mtune cflag was introduced with 3.4.6 version. I'm not sure - maybe it will just ignore it.

Consult gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs for more info about allowed cflags.

Always use -march which also implies -mtune (== -mcpu (deprecated) ).

Is this your way to say: "I'm deeply grateful to Gentoo developers for providing this wonderful OS for free and also to members of this great support forum"?
In hope I got this translation right I'll throw in my two cents: you better set your CHOST to i686 now - before you bootstrap.
