Hey Folks,
Have any of you had trouble getting the X Font Server to read downloaded truetype fonts. I downloaded some fonts from 1001 Fonts (http://1001fonts.com) and placed them in a new directory (/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/downloaded_truetype). Then I ran ttmkfdir -o fonts.scale and mkfontdir in the directory to create fonts.scale and fonts.dir files. I added the directory to the catalogue in /etc/X11/fs/config, and then restarted the font server. The fonts didn't show up so I looked at the log output. Apparently the directory is unreadable. Here is the metalog output (from /var/log/everything/):
Jun 12 00:32:05 [xfs] listening on port -1
Jun 12 00:32:06 [xfs] ignoring font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/downloaded_truetype/ (unreadable)
I have checked the permissions, they seem okay (rx permissions to user/group/world). Truetype is set in the USE variable, so the font server should have been compiled with truetype support (sharefonts, freefonts, and fonts in the /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype directory seem to load just fine). The freetype module is being loaded in /etc/X11/XF86Config. When I put the directory in /etc/X11/XftConfig, Nautilus is able to read the fonts, but no other application (including mozilla and the control-center). This is all using the GNOME 1.x, XFree86 4.2.0-r12, and GTK+ 2.0.3-r1 ebuilds, BTW.
Any ideas?
