Hi there,
I would like to know something about the difference between the stage1 and stage3 tarballs. what are the pros and contras (if any), why stage not is not supported and which is advised in which circumstances? (if it has any meaning - eg. low capacity machine case) _________________ Quis custodiet ipsos, custodes? |

Stage 1 could be debated as being the most optimized installation. It's not that much harder, just very time consuming as it compiles everything from scratch.
Stage three makes for a fast installation...but some would argue that it's not as optimized. May be true, but when you have some time to spare...you can always do an 'emerge -e system' and it will recompile everything from the ground up.
Personally...I like doing the stage 3 install...I get everything in place and running the way I need it to...and then I do the 'emerge -e system' when I sleep. A full system compile can take a really long time. _________________ -- Coplan

And don't forget, only the stage3 method is officially supported.... _________________
