I know this has been covered, but I also understand you can do this many ways (from fewer starting packages to parralel startup), and just wanted to know what all everyone did to reduce their system overhead and boot times. _________________ The day Microsoft makes a product that doesn't suck, is the day they make a vacuum cleaner. |

Recent baselayout is great - backgrounds networking and starts X as soon as possible, not once every little thing is done.
InitNG is killer for speed, but is still in a fairly dodgy state in that it may just randomly not work. Still, so long as it's an extra option in Grub, the worst it can do is not boot properly. _________________ What are you, stupid? |

Funny
Not everyone has the luxury of running the computer 24/7, and personally I don't see the point either. The electricity bill can become quite expensive...
So unless you're a BOINC addict (which I am btw ), shutting off your machine is a perfectly fine thing to do.
And yeah, I agree that booting should be *much* faster. |

Actually, without a fan control, rebooting can hurt your system due to chip creep (thermal expansion and all that). I don't know the major effects of it beyond that, though.
As for the electricity, I'm waiting for someone to come up with a reliable way to power a box with minimal extrenal power, but until they get superconductors down cheap enough to mass produce and to an operating temp of ~200 F, I don't think it will happen.
That last line I find funny, since in alot of cases on the forums, boots are usually measured in SECONDS, and you mentioned making it MUCH faster.
Ah, the great adventure that is Linux! The lazy, impatienct man's OS _________________ The day Microsoft makes a product that doesn't suck, is the day they make a vacuum cleaner. |

Who talks about 24/7? I turn on my computer every morning, and it's up and running before I am done with preparing other stuff.
As someone else said - boot time is measured in seconds, not minutes. If you boot once per day it is no real issue.
Regards, Joe
Edit: Though I agree with faster booting is more luxurious... |
