/usr/portage?

Hey, so im about to install a fresh gentoo box and im thinking about the partitioning scheme...

is it possible to have ALL the stuff that portage uses in /usr/portage?

i know that you get portage and distfiles there as default.. but i was thinking about the tmp folder where the ebuilds are building ...
(i know its prossible for this setting PORTAGE_TMP or something liek it in make.conf)
But is it possible, or would it delete say a /usr/portage/tmp when i do "emerge --sync"?

i was also intrested in having the /var/db thing in say /usr/portage/db or something similar.. also possible from make.conf??

im not on gentoo now, so i cant really look.

just had that idea....

any takers?

don't know about that, but you could try symlinks as a workaround

I'd recommend to not store the /var locations under /usr/portage. By default emerge --sync wipes everything there except some hardcoded dirs (like distfiles). There are ways to work around that, but this is going to result in hacks on top of hacks.

OK cool, i wont.

ill think i do a partition and mount it like /usr/portage and then have each folder in it like
/usr/portage/portage
/usr/portage/tmp
/usr/portage/var

or something..

another question, how large a partition would be enough for this..
like ~2gb for the partition, where portage would use ~500mb and another 1500mb for compilation-temp-files.. roughly.

that would be enough, right?

like mozilla i know takes roughly 1gb in tmp when compiling... and this way i may even remmeber to clear distfiles somewhat often
