I frequently play games on a second X server, and sometimes switch back to the first X server during the game. Sometimes this works fine, but sometimes switching between the X servers completely hardlocks my computer. I can ping it and SSH in, but I can't get the computer back into a useable state. I've tried killing X and everything related to it, but no matter what I do, my computer won't respond to the ctrl alt f1-12 key combinations. I always end up having to power my computer off.
I used to think that it was either the game I was playing (Enemy Territory), or my nvidia drivers (xorg 7, nvidia 8178), but other people using ubuntu and arch that I play the game with don't have this problem. This isn't a nvidia 8xxx driver problem, as it happens with the 7xxx and 6xxx series of nvidia drivers.
Here's my xorg.conf: http://www.rafb.net/paste/results/A6YJNS60.html

Anyone have any idea how to fix this?

Same problem here, I have searched a lot, but I've never found a real fix.

I first found that launching again something on the display that was used by your game(via ssh) , then close this application. And it generally doesn't look up again. But it was real PITA

Recently I compile my kernel with magic syskeys,

And when having this 'hardlock', I found that alt+printkey+r (to put keyboard in raw mode IIRC)
allow me to alt+leftarrow to have previous DISPLAY (the one with your WM... not the one with the game which is closed)

It usually works ;)

EDIT: /usr/src/linux/Documentation/sysrq.txt but theres is also /usr/src/linux/Documentation/SAK.txt

I'll give that workaround a try, it's better than having to reboot.
Anyone else have any ideas how I could fix it?
