When I start KDM it takes approximatley 60 seconds to load.
I know it's not X because "xstart" takes less than a second to load.
When KDM is starting I do see a lot of I/O activity according to my harddrive led.
INFO:
Laptop with a:
Pentium 4 2.6 Ghz
512 MB DDR
GeForce 4 488 Go 64MB
40 GB IBM
XFree86 version 4.3.0
nvidia-kernel and nvidia-glx version 4191
Does anybody know how I can speed thins up?
thnx. |

I would re-emerge freetype, xft and fontconfig. This solved the problem for me after upgrading to Xfree 4.3.
Is this a new install by the way? If it is you might want to check to see if your hdparm settings are correct (UDMA turned on etc.) Do a search for hdparm for more information on this. |

My KDM is a lot slower too(than it was a couple of months ago).
It could be Xfree 4.3, or it could be KDE 3.1. _________________ C is for Cookies! |

I think Elm0 solution helped!
I downgraded freetype, xft and fontconfig and now KDM takes 5 secs to load instead of 60.
thnx Elm0!!!
(i'm going to boot a few more times to see if it really works.) |

Just zapping the X server should suffice... no need to reboot...
At most, do Code: | /etc/init.d/xdm restart |
cheers,

Nah, it's just fontconfig. Don't know why, but slow KDM -> re-emerge fontconfig -> fast KDM... |

KDM for me took over 60 seconds to load
remerged fontconfig got it to 25-30 seconds
remerge freetype got it to aout 15 seconds
remerge xft - down to about 7 seconds !!! |

I emerged XFree 3 and have this probelm (and all my antialaising died).
The previous Xfree (from a new install of the latest gentoo release) worked fine (so, I ask myself in retrospect, why did I update...)
I have tried all the suggestions (reemerge fontconfig, run fc-cache), but
no help.
X starts fine. The background image (kdm's) is shown, However, there is a black 'box' where the kdm login will be, but no content in it. For many seconds.
If I want to switch to a character login while waiting for the kdm login window to render, the same delay continues before the switch happens. I do notice that just before the switch happens, the kdm window's content is drawn.
