I know this is totally basic for the pros, but I was wondering how to get one of those really cool desktops with transparent screens. I have seen them in screenshots of slackware and various other distros but I have never looked into how to do it. I am emerging kde right now and would like to set it up so I have that look when I get it going.
I can't even seem to find a link right now to show what I mean, but surely someone will post one since I have noticed people using them. I usually see a window with cli being displayed on that desktop too ( presume it is cli since that is what it looks like, but it could be something else).
OK, found a link on someone's signature, I hope Lotusvale doesn't mind:

and here:

that's what I mean by the transparent effect. |

those are different terminal emulators people are running. You have a wide variety: aterm, eterm, gnome-terminal.. Right now I'm using Eterm, but getting it to look just right is kind of a pain. But check out how minimal I made it!

The way to get the terminals transparent varies per each one. If you want something very simple to set up transparency for, gnome-terminal is probably the way to go. Also you might want to check out root-tail.[/img] |

my friend did this long time ago i still use it
#!/usr/bin/perl -w
foreach $argnum (0 .. $#ARGV) { $argu="$argu $ARGV[$argnum]"; }
$red = int( rand( 255 ) );
$green = int( rand( 255 ) );
$blue = int( rand( 255 ) );
$options = "--cmod-red $red --cmod-green $green --cmod-blue $blue --cmod
120";
exec( "Eterm $options --trans $argu &" )
i have made new file in /usr/bin called eterm
it put random transparent color everytime you open eterm

probably not without at least installing the gnome libs, i would look into other terminals such as aterm or eterm (those two seem to be the most popular ones) |

If you only plan on installing KDE then use konsole. Setting up the transparency can be done via the right-click menu:

Not really a dumb question at all. emerge -p gnome-terminal ought to tell you the answer to that question . KDE should come with it's own console too which supports transparency. I know they used to have one called Konsole back when I used KDE, I don't know anymore. |

yeah, I use red hat 7.3 on my main box and it has 'konsole' on it for the term
Damn! It was there the whole time. Duhhh, lol.
I opened up Konsole and looked under settings and there it was - settings-schema-transparent konsole.
Thanks for the heads up!
Not one of my brighter moments, lol.
Ooops, I just scrolled up and saw the example too, thanks a lot guys!
I am emerging kde 3.1 on my gentoo box so I figure the default term will be Konsole so I can have everything set up that way. |

Hi !
The only wm I know of which can do transparent menus and window titles is x11-wm/waimea.
here's a shot of my desktop :
The console is aterm, it's somehow more leightweight than Eterm so I prefer it

actually kde can do transparent menus too, you just have to change the themes and settings under look n feel
If memory serves correctly, there are only 3 pre-installed themes that allow for that:
Kermamik
kde default
and .Net
preferences-look n feel-style
then you have to employ the transpareny effect in the menus |
